How to get it

Very rare zone drop: the item Chewed-On Reins of the Terrified Pack Mule can fall from the hexthralled humans of Drustvar: Hexthralled Falconers, Soldiers, Guardsmen, Crossbowmen and Halberdiers. They stand in and around Corlain in the north-west of the zone, from the Corlain Armory and Pikeman Ridge up past the Corlain Aviary to the grounds of Waycrest Manor; the hunt is a round of those places, killing every creature with Hexthralled in its name.

Chance 6.4% per try, so about 16 tries on average — Worked out, not read as such. Wowhead's item page (read 2026-10-11) records the reins from nine hexthralled creatures of Drustvar, 544 in 3,271,111 loots together: 0.0166% a kill, or about 1 in 6,000. 6.4% is that figure for one hour's visit at about 400 kills (1 - (1 - 0.000166)^400); the kill rate is an estimate, the one this guide's Goldenmane record uses, and no measured rate for Corlain was found. By creature: Hexthralled Falconer 255 in 813,836 (0.031%) and 86 in 1,295,187 (0.007%) under its two ids, Hexthralled Soldier 85 in 390,582, Hexthralled Guardsman 64 in 383,425 and 13 in 81,545, Hexthralled Halberdier 20 in 105,726 and 5 in 24,034, Hexthralled Crossbowman 11 in 144,217 and 5 in 32,559. The Rarity addon assumes 1 in 4,000. The tooltip gives no figure

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

Hunt in a moving round of Corlain, Pikeman Ridge, the Corlain Armory, the Corlain Aviary and Upper Corlain. The old method no longer works: the camps north of Corlain on Pikeman Ridge used to refill almost at once, and a 2023 comment says their creatures now take five and a half minutes to come back.

A 2026 comment gives such a round on the Drustvar map:

  • 28.8, 31.9
  • 27.4, 24.3
  • 29.0, 20.8
  • 34.1, 17.3
  • 28.3, 25.6
  • 27.6, 27.9
  • 29.8, 18.0
  • 35.5, 13.0
  • 29.8, 27.6
  • 31.6, 21.2
  • 33.2, 20.9
  • 30.4, 20.6
  • 29.3, 22.3

Older comments name:

  • the outside of Waycrest Manor, about 32, 23
  • the Corlain Armory, about 25, 36
  • Barrowknoll Cemetery, about 56, 53

The coordinates given are the middle of Wowhead's tooltip positions for the Hexthralled Falconer (creature 131519; 31.4-32.6, 22.4-25.6), the creature with the highest recorded rate. Not every creature with Hexthralled in its name is on Wowhead's list: the Hexthralled Lieutenants that the 2023 comment mentions are not, and a 2026 comment names two more (creatures 134307 and 133891) that do not drop the reins. The journal names only the zone; the wiki lists the same five kinds of creature and gives no chance.

About 6,000 kills are expected at Wowhead's rate, some 15 hours at the estimated pace, but many reports are far worse than the count suggests. Most of Wowhead's counts date from 2018, so the present chance may be lower than the recorded one; nothing official was found. Players on Wowhead:

  • got it after 85,093 kills (2025), 68,756 (2025), 19,331 (2022), and 6,445 and 6,173 (2022)
  • one group counted ten mounts in 141,995 kills (2020, about 1 in 14,200)
  • others report nothing after 50,000 to 60,000 (2022) or 55,000 (2024)
  • a few had it within 10 or 357 kills (2026)

The reins do not bind when picked up (Wowhead's tooltip shows no binding line, and its comments speak of selling them), so they can change hands; this guide counts the drop. The item asks for level 10 (wiki). No guide is linked: none that is current was found, and the round above is a Wowhead comment.

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
