How to get it

Very rare zone drop: the item Goldenmane's Reins can fall from the enemies of Stormsong Valley, above all Lord Stormsong's followers, the tidesages and the Irontide pirates; Wowhead lists 31 kinds of creature that have dropped it. The usual place to hunt is the Brineworks, by Mariner's Strand in the east of the zone, where Shipwright Turncoats and Brinebrawn Cannoneers stand close together and come back quickly.

Chance 7% per try, so about 14 tries on average — Worked out, not read as such. Wowhead's item page (read 2026-10-11) records 126 reins in 621,581 loots of Shipwright Turncoat and 86 in 501,973 of Brinebrawn Cannoneer, the two creatures of the Brineworks: 212 in 1,123,554, 0.019% a kill or about 1 in 5,300. 7% is that figure for one hour's visit at about 400 kills (1 - (1 - 0.000189)^400); the kill rate is an estimate from two Wowhead comments of 2026 (15,267 kills in about 60 hours; 14,000 in three days of about eight hours). Over all 31 creatures Wowhead has 1,008 in 5,813,509 (0.017%). The tooltip gives no figure

Notes and sources

The coordinates given are the middle of Wowhead's spawn points for the Shipwright Turncoat (68.4-70.8, 50.2-53.8); a comment gives 69.6, 50.4 for the Brineworks.

About 5,300 kills are expected at Wowhead's rate, some 13 hours of killing, but most recent reports are worse than the count suggests. Most of Wowhead's counts date from 2018, so the present chance may be lower than the recorded one; nothing official was found. Players on Wowhead:

  • got it after 4,545 kills (2026), 15,267 at the Brineworks (2026), 28,379 (2026), 15,327 from a Brinebrawn Cannoneer (2025) and 30-35 thousand (2025)
  • one reports nothing after 110 thousand (2026)
  • one (2025) puts the chance at about 1 in 25,000 and says not to believe Wowhead's figure
  • another had two in 2,000 kills (2025)

The journal names only the zone. The wiki says it drops from human enemies of Tiragarde Sound and Stormsong Valley tied to the Irontide Raiders or Lord Stormsong. Wowhead's list is wider, with Briarback quilboar (Briarback Kraultender 83 in 761,506), drowned cultists and a few creatures of Tiragarde Sound and of the Stormsong monastery in Boralus.

The highest recorded rates are away from the Brineworks:

  • Tidesage Ritualist: 91 in 47,306 (0.19%, Boralus)
  • Tidesage Bankson: 22 in 21,727
  • Drowned Hierarch: 25 in 26,303
  • Foreman Scripps: 68 in 95,703
  • Stormsong Loyalist: 113 in 409,456 and 57 in 178,135

Whether those can be killed in number today was not established; a 2021 comment says the monastery's creatures are there, plentiful and quick to return, for Alliance characters that have not yet done the war campaign.

The item does not bind when picked up (wiki; Wowhead's tooltip shows no binding line), so it can change hands; this guide counts the drop.

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
