Look it up on WowheadHow to get it
Fished up, very rarely, from the waters of Kul Tiras and Zandalar: the wiki names the sea around them, and any cast into open water there can bring it up, Mechagon included. No fishing skill level, pole or bait is asked.
Chance 1.6% per try, so about 63 tries on average — Worked out, not read as such, and for one hour of fishing. Wowhead's item page (read 2026-10-11) records 15,563 rays in 45,485,484 fishing loots over ten zones (0.034% a cast), but most of that dates from the first weeks of Battle for Azeroth, before the rate was cut at the end of August 2018 (comments of that week: one or two rays an hour before, none in 3,000 casts after). The two zones added after the cut are the only counts free of it: Mechagon 35 in 625,222 and the Battle of Dazar'alor raid 10 in 114,212, together 45 in 739,434, or 0.0061% a cast, about 1 in 16,400. At about 270 casts an hour (players report 11,683 casts in 50 hours, 13,189 in about 50 and 100,000 in nearly 300) one hour gives 1 - (1 - 0.0000609)^270 = 1.6%. The pooled figure would give 8.8% an hour and is not believed. The catches players have posted since 2023 fit the lower rate better: of some thirty that give a count, the middle one is at about 10,000 casts
Time there about 1 h a visit

In all: about 0.1 h of play, starting from nothing.
Getting there
/way Stormsong Valley 40.1 34.8 - Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Boralus*
- Fly the rest of the way
/way Zuldazar 57.8 63.2 - Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Zuldazar*
- Fly the rest of the way
/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight
line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.
Notes and sources
Any spot will do. The two places given are ones players keep naming, each on its faction's own continent: for the Alliance the beach by Seeker's Vista in Kul Tiras (40.1, 34.8; catches reported there from 2025 to 2026), for the Horde the main pier of the Port of Zandalar, across from the ship to Kul Tiras (57.8, 63.2; catches in 2025 and 2026). Whether the other faction can fish at either in peace was not checked. Other places named:
- Anyport in Drustvar (20.0, 43.0)
- Boralus harbour
- Mechagon (88.3, 48.2 and 18.4, 53.5)
- the Battle of Dazar'alor raid
Leave a bag slot free and let the catch reach the bags before casting again: players have lost it both ways (2021, 2026). A Class Trial character cannot loot it (2022). It also turns up, rarely, in the bubbles shown by the Secret Fish Goggles anywhere in the world (comments from 2020 to 2026).
The wiki says only that it is fished from the ocean waters surrounding Zandalar and Kul Tiras and from the Hyper-Compressed Ocean, an engineer's pool; early comments (2018) have it from inland water and pools of those zones as well, and one of 2025 from a pond in Mechagon.
One visit is counted as an hour of fishing. At the rate worked out here about 60 hours are expected, and the counts players post run from 21 casts to 60,000, with one at 100,000 and still without it (2026). There is no lockout, and a 2025 reply says there is no protection against bad luck either.
The chance rests on 45 catches in two zones, and that Mechagon's rate holds for the other zones is an assumption. Wowhead's per-zone figures elsewhere all mix the weeks before the cut with the years after:
- Zuldazar 5,011 in 11.6 million
- Drustvar 2,879 in 4.1 million
- Boralus 2,111 in 6.7 million
- Tiragarde Sound 1,647 in 5.2 million
- Stormsong Valley 1,300 in 3.8 million
- Dazar'alor 1,139 in 4.6 million
- Nazmir 737 in 6.5 million
- Vol'dun 694 in 2.3 million
The item's tooltip shows no binding and it is not unique (hotfix of August 2018), so a caught ray can be sold on the auction house; that is a mention only, and the achievement Catchin' Some Rays is given only for catching it. An aquatic mount that can only be summoned in water; the item asks for level 10 (wiki).
Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
