From Island Expeditions, in two ways at once. It is a rare reward at the end of an expedition on which yetis were among the island's creatures (Dread Chain always has them), and it can be inside the Salvage crates of several islands, most often Skittering Hollow Salvage, which the salvage captain beside the Expedition Map sells for 175 Seafarer's Dubloons in the weeks he has it. The dubloons come from the expeditions themselves.
Chance 8.26% per try, so about 12 tries on average — Per crate, for Skittering Hollow Salvage: Wowhead has 54 mounts in 654 opened (read 2026-10-10). Its other crates: Dread Chain Salvage 43 in 1,209 (3.56%), Crestfall Salvage 85 in 2,477 (3.43%), Snowblossom Salvage 3 in 957 (0.31%). wow.gg says about 5% a crate. The chance of the end-of-expedition reward was never published: wow.gg guesses under 1%; one player counted 1,726 expeditions before it came (2019), another 45 Mythic runs (2025)

Notes and sources
About 12 crates are expected at Wowhead's figure for Skittering Hollow Salvage, some 2,100 dubloons; every one of these crates costs 175 dubloons (wiki). The hours given in the requirements are for one crate, and the dubloon rate is the weak figure. The time on the spot is buying and opening a crate; an expedition itself is the 5.5 minutes counted above.
The captain carries three island crates a week, and the wiki says an island's crate is on sale only while that island is one of the week's three, so the crate wanted is not there every week. Dubloons keep (the Twilight Avenger's notes) and can be saved for it. The captains' coordinates, the Expedition Map beside them (Flynn Fairwind's table in Boralus Harbor; Captain Rez'okun in the Port of Zandalar, 44.6, 95.4) and the dubloon arithmetic are those of this guide's Twilight Avenger, read the same day, and were not asked of Wowhead again. A hotfix of 17 June 2026 put expedition queueing right again in Midnight (wiki).
The sources disagree on which crates hold it:
- Wowhead's loot data: the four crates named with the drop chance (its counts are of crates opened since patch 8.3)
- the wiki, and wow.gg the same: Crestfall, Dread Chain, Jorundall, Rotting Mire and Skittering Hollow Salvage
- Wowhead's guide (updated 2021): 'All Salvage'
- comments from 2020 to 2025: out of Jorundall Salvage, which Wowhead's data does not list
wow.gg calls the crate seller an 'Open Seas Salvage Specialist' next to the Dubloons Traders; the wiki has Captain Nightrunner and Captain Kitt.
Every expedition with yetis on the island carries the direct chance as well: since patch 8.1 their being on the island is enough, win or lose and on any difficulty, with a better chance on higher difficulty (wiki; comments). Where the yetis are:
- the wiki: always on Dread Chain, and Craghorn yetis also on Molten Cay
- Wowhead's guide: 'commonly on Dread Chain and very rarely on other islands'
- wow.gg: regularly on Skittering Hollow and now and then on Crestfall
- comments of 2018: in caves on Whispering Reef and Verdant Wilds
Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
