Drops from a rare in the Battle for Azeroth version of Darkshore, a different one for each side and only while that side holds the Darkshore warfront. Both stand on the same spot by the main road north of Bashal'Aran: Horde characters kill the bear Blackpaw himself, Alliance characters kill the Forsaken warlock Agathe Wyrmwood, who is trying to subjugate him and drops him as a Caged Bear. Both items teach the same mount, and each character gets one looted kill per turn of the warfront.
Chance 5.94% once a week, so about 17 tries on average — Wowhead, Horde item (166428) from Blackpaw (NPC 149660): 4,801 mounts in 80,790 recorded loots, read 2026-10-11. Wowhead's tooltip for the Alliance item (166438, Caged Bear, from Agathe Wyrmwood) shows 4.40%; its counts were not read. The counts may include kills made after a character's one chance of the turn was used, which would put the real chance per counted kill higher

- The character's own faction in control of the Darkshore warfront; under the other side's control its rare cannot be attacked or is not there. The warfront table (Boralus harbour, Port of Zandalar) and the faction's world quests on the Darkshore map show who holds it · 7 days
In all: spread over 7 days, starting from nothing.
Getting there

/way Darkshore 49.5 24.9 - Take the portal from Western Earthshrine to Mount Hyjal

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight

Notes and sources
Wowhead titles the two items 166428 Blackpaw (Horde, from the bear) and 166438 Caged Bear (Alliance, from Agathe). Both tooltips say 'Teaches you how to summon Blackpaw', and a 2025 comment confirms they teach the same mount; the wiki's page for Agathe lists the mount under its own name, not as the Caged Bear. Blackpaw is a level 51 rare, Agathe a level 50 rare elite, both added in patch 8.1.0.
Coordinates: Wowhead's tooltip has Blackpaw at 49.4-49.6, 24.8-25.0; the wiki has Agathe at 49.6, 25; Wowhead's guide gives 49.5, 25.1 for both.
The lockout is not a calendar week: each character gets one looted kill of its rare per turn of the warfront, so 'weekly' understates the wait. Wowhead's guide (written 2018, last edited 2019) says 'You can kill the rares as often as you want, but you can only get a chance at their special loot once per character per contribution cycle', and that rares reset 'once your faction takes control of Darkshore'. A full turn of the cycle is two 7-day warfront phases plus two contribution phases (wiki); how long the contribution phases run today was not established.
Comments on the item agree in the main (2018: 'one chance to loot the rare per Warfront cycle'; 2024: 'Killed 40 times, once per warfront cycle'), but a later 2024 one says 'I killed once per day for 78 days before I got it'. A 2021 reply found Agathe dropping nothing on a second character of the same realm after the first had looted her; this guide's Ashenvale Chimaera has a 2025 comment that loot is per character.
About 17 looted kills are expected at 5.94% and 23 at 4.40%; commenters report 70 and 78 kills, and one got it in 2025 'after multiple runs as both horde and alliance'. Because each side has its own rare and its own turn, an Alliance and a Horde character between them get an attempt in every turn.
Which side attacks which, from comments:
- under Alliance control a Horde character found both and could attack neither, then killed Agathe on an Alliance character (2021 reply)
- 'when alliance is in control she stands slightly in front of him' (2019)
- a 2026 reply found Blackpaw friendly to the Alliance with no Agathe in sight and a Horde character getting no drops, which was not explained
The conquestcapped guide (updated 2026) puts them at 56.4, 47.0 and 55.4, 35.4, which no other source supports. It also says the rares are only there in a 'Patrol phase' and that an opening quest at the warfront table is needed, neither of which another source has, so whether the Warfronts feature must be unlocked first was not established. The same guide gives 5-10 minutes for the rare to come back after a kill. wow.gg lists a Blackpaw guide (2026), but its page came back empty.
Wowhead's guide is of the patch 8.1 era and speaks of item levels of that time; it is linked for the rare's place, the faction rule and the reset rule.
Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
