From Island Expeditions, in two ways at once. It is a rare reward at the end of an expedition on which bats (canopy stalkers, which can be on any island) were among the island's creatures, and it can be inside the island Salvage crates that the salvage captain beside the Expedition Map sells for Seafarer's Dubloons: 120 for a rare crate, 175 for an epic one, three kinds on offer each week. The dubloons come from the expeditions themselves.
Chance 2.34% per try, so about 43 tries on average — Per crate, pooled over the seven Salvage crates Wowhead records it in (read 2026-10-11): 189 mounts in 8,078 opened. The two rare crates (120 dubloons) come to 43 in 961, 4.47% (Molten Cay 24 in 527, Whispering Reef 19 in 434); the five epic ones (175 dubloons) to 146 in 7,117, 2.05% (Havenswood 36 in 1,368, Crestfall 34 in 2,477, Jorundall 32 in 1,661, Snowblossom 28 in 957, Skittering Hollow 16 in 654). The chance of the end-of-expedition reward was never published; wow.gg guesses under 1% even on Mythic

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight
line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.
Notes and sources
About 43 crates are expected at the pooled chance, about 22 if only the two rare crates Wowhead has counts for are bought (some 2,700 dubloons). The hours counted are for one rare crate, and the dubloon rate is the least certain figure. The time on the spot is buying and opening a crate; an expedition itself is the 6 minutes counted above.
Which crates hold it is not settled:
- Wowhead's guide (updated 2021) and wow.gg (updated 2026): any rare or epic Salvage crate
- the wiki: 'rare or epic salvage boxes'
- Wowhead's contained-in list: seven of the eleven island crates
- comments of 2020 and 2021: Verdant Wilds Salvage and Rotting Mire Salvage as well, which that list lacks
The captain carries three island crates a week: the wiki says a crate is offered when its island is one of that week's three. By the wiki the rare crates are Whispering Reef, Verdant Wilds, Un'gol Ruins and Molten Cay, and the epic ones Snowblossom, Skittering Hollow, Rotting Mire, Jorundall, Havenswood, Crestfall and Dread Chain. Wowhead's crate counts are of crates opened since patch 8.3.
Every expedition with bats on the island carries the direct chance too: since patch 8.1 the creatures only have to be on the island, not killed, and the chance is higher on higher difficulties (Blizzard's post quoted in Wowhead's guide). Wowhead's guide has the bats, canopy stalkers, on all islands. Wowhead comments from 2019 count 1,500 to 3,000 expeditions for the direct drop when the content was current.
Expeditions can be queued alone since patch 9.1.5, and a hotfix of 17 June 2026 put queueing right again in Midnight (wiki). The captains' coordinates are those read from Wowhead for the Risen Mare in 2026. The mount binds when picked up.
