How to get it

Rare drop from Rustfeather, a mechanical dread raven on the hilltop of The Outflow in the south-east of Mechagon Island. It comes back about every 25 minutes and gives loot to a character once a day. No quest on the island has to be done to loot it.

Chance 0.49% once a day, so about 204 tries on average — Wowhead (read 2026-10-11): 405 mounts in 82,093 recorded loots of Rustfeather (0.49%); the item's tooltip shows the same 0.49%. The count is per looting player and runs from patch 8.2 (2019)

Guide Wowhead: Comprehensive Mechagon Guide

Before you go

  • The way to Mechagon Island. The rare gives loot without any quest done: a character can simply fly across from Kul Tiras, and players set out from Drustvar. The island's introduction is only worth doing for its teleporter and flight point · about 0.2 h

In all: about 0.2 h of play, starting from nothing.

Getting there

Rustfeather, The Outflow
Mechagon Island · 65.6, 78.6
/way Mechagon Island 65.6 78.6
From Stormwind (Alliance) about 2.7 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Boralus*
  2. Fly the rest of the way
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 2.1 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Zuldazar*
  2. Take the sub from Zuldazar to Mechagon*
  3. Fly the rest of the way

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

About 200 looted kills are expected at 0.49%, one a day for each character, which is why players park many characters on the hill. Wowhead commenters report it on the first kill (2026), after about 50 (2026), about 100 (2026), 178 (2025), 644 (2022), 789 and 825 (2026) and more than 1,000 attempts.

The daily lock is a hidden quest, 55811: a 2019 Wowhead comment (+65) says the rares that drop these mounts 'only yield loot for you once per day' and gives a macro that reads it, and a 2020 tracking list has the same id. Wowhead's Mechagon guide gives the same rule (see the Rusty Mechanocrawler).

Rustfeather does not show as a rare to a character that has not done the island's quests (a 2026 comment), so addons that watch for rares can miss it: target it by name. With others waiting it dies within seconds, and commenters use a macro that targets it and fires an instant attack so as to get a hit in (2024, 2025).

Respawn timings:

  • a 2025 commenter timed 36 respawns at 16 to 34 minutes, median 23
  • others give 15-30 minutes (2022), about 25 (2025) and about 20 (2021)
  • the most-voted comment (2019, +197) timed 40-70 minutes over 15 realms, so it was slower when the island was new

The time on the spot is an estimate: half a respawn's wait and the kill.

Nothing has to be unlocked (see the requirements). A 2021 comment held that only characters of level 40 and over got loot; the level 10 report of 2024 is later. The introduction takes about 20 minutes by that 2021 comment and gives the teleporter back to the island.

Coordinates: Wowhead's tooltip has it between 65.0-65.8 and 77.4-79.6; the 2019 comment gives 65.9, 78.2. Whether the Rustfeather of the island's alternate future (Chromie's daily quest The Other Place) drops the mount was not looked into.

A ground mount (comments of 2019 and 2026). Wowhead says 8% of profiles have it. Wowhead's Comprehensive Mechagon Guide is listed on the item's own page; it was read for the Rusty Mechanocrawler in 2026 and not opened again for this mount.

Confidence in this entry: high. Looked up in 2026.
