How to get it

Use a Zan-Tien Lasso on the Ivory Cloud Serpent, a friendly rare cloud serpent that flies a fast clockwise circuit high over the Vale of Eternal Blossoms while the mogu assault, The Warring Clans, is the one running there. The lasso is a two-second channel, made standing still or hovering on a flying mount, and when it finishes the mount is put straight into the bags. The lasso itself is a rare drop from the hostile mogu of the Battle for Azeroth version of the Vale.

Guides Wowhead: Visions of N'Zoth Assaults Guide - Uldum and Vale of Eternal Blossoms Invasions · Blizzard Watch: How to get the Ivory Cloud Serpent in WoW

Before you go

  • The Visions of N'Zoth assaults unlocked: Nazjatar's opening quests as far as the portal home, Magni's Heart of Azeroth quests in the Chamber of Heart, then the patch 8.3 chain through the first assault in Uldum and the first in the Vale · about 3.5 h
  • A Zan-Tien Lasso, a rare drop from the hostile mogu of the present-day Vale whichever assault is running; the Zan-Tien Raiders and Callers at the Golden Stair are the usual choice · about 0.75 h
  • The Warring Clans (the mogu assault) has to be the assault running in the Vale. Lesser assaults last three and a half days and change at the weekly reset and once mid-week; the Vale's can also be the mantid one or the week-long Black Empire one · 2 weeks

In all: about 4.3 h of play, spread over 2 weeks, starting from nothing.

Getting there

Ivory Cloud Serpent spawn point, high above the Zan-Tien camp south of the Ruins of Guo-Lai
Vale of Eternal Blossoms · 26.8, 55.1
/way Vale of Eternal Blossoms 26.8 55.1
From Stormwind (Alliance) about 2.1 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Jade Forest*
  2. Fly the rest of the way
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 1.8 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Jade Forest*
  2. Fly the rest of the way

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

The journal calls it a drop, but nothing is killed, and no source gives the lasso a chance to fail (a 2020 Wowhead comment: '100% chance'; many since tell of the mount arriving as the channel ends). What is uncertain is the wait.

It appears high above 26.8, 55.1 (Wowhead comments; the wiki has 27, 55, Blizzard Watch 27, 56): about level with the top of the Gate of the Setting Sun and some 20 yards below the Great Worms From Beyond, whose beam slows a flyer but does not matter to someone hovering in place. It is small and very fast, flies clockwise round the edge of the zone and passes over the roof of the Gate of the Setting Sun, where several players waited instead (a tower at 15.5, 70.7). Wowhead's tooltip for the serpent lists some 200 points right round the zone, which is its flight path.

It stops when someone starts the lasso channel and vanishes about ten seconds later (wiki); anyone with a lasso who channels in that window gets the mount too. The lasso cannot be used while moving or in a druid's flight form: with skyriding, stop or switch to steady flight first. Players spam a macro that targets the serpent and uses the lasso (Blizzard Watch and the wiki give it); the lasso's range is 40 yards by one comment.

After a catch it is gone for a while. Players' timings:

  • the wiki: 'every two hours or so'
  • warcraftmounts.com: 1.5 to 2.5 hours
  • players overall: one to three and a half hours

Left alone it seems to keep circling: a 2025 comment saw it pass at least ten times, and a 2026 one found it already up after two hours of waiting at the spawn point. It appears within a minute or two of the assault starting (comments of 2022 and 2025), so the hour on the spot is an estimate between those cases.

The Vale has to be in its Battle for Azeroth state: Zidormi at the Seat of Knowledge (81.0, 29.6, wiki) switches it. Blizzard Watch says the lasso cannot drop for a character in the older version; a 2023 comment from a player who found only Shao-Tien mogu looks like that case.

Sources disagree on two points. The assault: most say only The Warring Clans, and two 2020 comments report 3 hours without a spawn during a Black Empire assault, but two 2020 replies claim a catch during a mantid assault or with the Vale's assault elsewhere. The lasso: the wiki and several comments (2020, 2021, 2024) have it dropping in the present-day Vale under any assault, even during the introduction quests, while warcraftmounts.com speaks of mogu 'which appear during Mogu Assaults'.

The lasso binds when picked up; whether it is used up was not established. Wowhead's guide (2020) gives this mount two sentences beside the assault schedule and the unlock; Blizzard Watch's article, also of 2020, is the step-by-step one. Mid-week changes are Fridays 7 pm Pacific on US realms (Wowhead's guide).

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
