How to get it

Looted, as the Deepstar Polyp, from Hirukon in the lake at Dimensional Falls in Zereth Mortis. He stays under water until someone with an Aurelid Lure fishes in the Aurelid Cluster there. The lure is made by Baroness Vashj in Maldraxxus from a Strange Goop, a very rare catch in Hirukon's own lake, and three things fetched from Zangarmarsh, Nazjatar and Vashj'ir. By players' reports the character that used the lure always gets the polyp, provided it is that character's first Hirukon kill of the day.

Before you go

  • A Strange Goop, fished anywhere in the lake at Dimensional Falls (52.6, 75.0): about one cast in 1,500 · about 6 h
  • The other three ingredients, none of them left to chance: a Pungent Blobfish from the Pungent Blobfish Cluster inside Coilfang Reservoir in Zangarmarsh (52.2, 37.9, down the pipe in the lake); a Flipper Fish from the Flipper Fish School in Zin-Azshari, Nazjatar (72.8, 24.3), where the fish hooked slips away and has to be clicked as it flops about; a Coilclutch Vine from a tower balcony on the second level of the ruins at Nar'shola Terrace in the Shimmering Expanse, Vashj'ir (34.7, 75.0). Nazjatar has to be opened on the character to get there · about 1.5 h
  • The four ingredients handed to Baroness Vashj, who fishes on the lake shore at the southern edge of Maldraxxus (57.6, 92.0): she makes the Aurelid Lure. Used at Hirukon's lake it gives a 15-minute buff that shows the Aurelid Cluster (51.9, 74.3); a catch from the cluster brings Hirukon up · about 0.5 h

In all: about 8 h of play, starting from nothing.

Getting there

Hirukon's lake, Dimensional Falls
Zereth Mortis · 51.6, 74.4
/way Zereth Mortis 51.6 74.4
From Stormwind (Alliance) about 2 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Oribos*
  2. Speak to Tal-Inara within Oribos to travel to Zereth Mortis
  3. Fly the rest of the way
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 1.9 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Oribos*
  2. Speak to Tal-Inara within Oribos to travel to Zereth Mortis
  3. Fly the rest of the way

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

These notes describe the one way that is in the player's own hands: making the lure. That its user is certain of the mount rests on players' reports, not on anything Blizzard published:

  • the two top comments on Wowhead (2022, +177: 'seemingly guaranteed'; 2022: the player triggering Hirukon 'is guaranteed' the polyp)
  • a 2025 comment ('using the lure makes it 100% drop')
  • Blizzard Watch (2022)

The condition, from the same comments: it has to be the character's first Hirukon kill of that day, so a character that has already joined a kill should keep the lure for the next day. In 2022 players who lost the mount that way wrote that a game master sent it after a ticket.

Everyone else who helps kill him has a small chance. Wowhead's count is 620 polyps in 13,501 recorded loots of Hirukon (4.59%, as read in 2026, and the figure its tooltip shows), but that pools the lure users' certain drops with everyone else's, so the chance without a lure is lower; Blizzard Watch puts it at about 1 in 100. Joining a kill is not a route that can be planned: Hirukon is only there when somebody has just used a lure.

The Strange Goop is the slow part. It can be caught anywhere on the lake (2022 comments), fishing skill is said not to matter, and 2026 comments still report catches (307, 600, 1,200, 1,600, 1,927, 2,500 and 2,873 casts). Wowhead's 391 in 576,166 is counted over all fishing in Zereth Mortis, most of it elsewhere, so it understates the lake's rate. The goop is not bound, and Wowhead's commenters say it and the other ingredients are sold on the auction house; that is a mention only.

Vashj does not have to be visited before the three ingredients are fetched. Getting around (both from a 2022 comment):

  • Zangarmarsh by the Shattrath portal
  • Vashj'ir by flying or through its introduction from a Hero's Call board
  • Nazjatar by the portal in Boralus or Dazar'alor once its introduction is done

The lure is consumed on use; the buff lasts 15 minutes, survives logging out, and lets the same player bring Hirukon up again on other realms within that time (wiki). The wiki and Blizzard Watch say Vashj offers a new lure every week after the first; a 2026 comment found no such offer once the mount had been looted.

Hirukon's position is Wowhead's tooltip one (51.4-51.6, 74.2-74.6); Wowhead's guide gives 51.6, 73.9 and the wiki 51.6, 74.6. Wowhead's guide was updated in 2025; its Hirukon steps match the 2022 comments. wow.gg has no guide for this mount at the address tried.

The mount is both a flying and an aquatic mount and takes no mount equipment (wiki). The polyp binds when picked up and asks for level 10 (wiki).

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
