How to get it

Rare drop from the elite combatants of the open-air arena of the Theater of Pain in Maldraxxus (the arena in the open world, not the dungeon of the same name beside it): Devmorta, Azmogal, Mistress Dyrax, Xantuth the Blighted, Ti'or and Unbreakable Urtz. Four of the six are in the rotation on a given day. A character of any covenant can get it. Sabriel the Bonecleaver, the seventh champion, does not drop it.

Chance 0.46% once a day, so about 217 tries on average — Worked out from Wowhead's page for the item (read 2026-10-11): 1,176 mounts in 256,559 recorded loots, pooled over the six combatants: Devmorta 84 in 23,872 (0.35%), Azmogal 91 in 16,176 (0.56%), Mistress Dyrax 157 in 40,176 (0.39%), Xantuth the Blighted 178 in 34,769 (0.51%), Ti'or 190 in 46,322 (0.41%), Unbreakable Urtz 476 in 95,244 (0.50%). The counts are per looting player and take in repeat kills on the same day, which by most accounts cannot drop the mount, so the chance on a kill that counts is higher and was never published; wow.gg and a player on Blizzard's forum (January 2021) say about 1% without a source

  2. Take the flight master to Maldraxxus
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 4.2 min of travel

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

How often a character gets a chance is disputed, and it decides how long this takes:

  • Warcraft Mounts says four bosses are in rotation on a given day and 'you have one chance of looting per boss per day'; wow.gg (updated 2026) says the same: four of six present, the rotation changing daily, the first kill of each boss a day being the one that matters
  • many Wowhead comments (2020 to 2026) hold instead that only the first combatant killed that day can drop it, whichever one it is, and track it with the hidden quest 62786; players in a 2021 Blizzard forum thread say the same ('First boss kill of the day (regardless of which boss)')
  • a few report a drop on a second or third kill of the same combatant in one day (2022), and a 2026 reply calls it a daily lockout for each boss, like a rare

None of this was settled. It is counted here as daily, and killing every combatant that is up once a day costs little more. At the pooled 0.46% that is about 218 kills that count on average, fewer if the true chance is nearer 1%; players' own counts run from a first kill to 150, 290, 359, 448 and 874.

Every character has its own chances, and it has dropped for characters of level 50 to 54 and of other covenants than the Necrolords (comments of 2020 to 2022; a 2024 one for a character with no covenant at all). Still dropping in 2026 (comment). If the bags are full the reins arrive in the mail (comments of 2020 and 2021).

The combatants are elites, not rares; two of them also count for the world quest Amateur Night and the daily Bet On Yourself, which is how groups for them used to be found. How they come out was not pinned down: a 2020 comment has them coming one by one, a 2023 one found four in the corners of the arena, and wow.gg has four present at once. The wiki lists the same six combatants and says only that the mount 'can drop from any of the non-rare bosses at the Theater of Pain'.

Coordinates: Wowhead's tooltip for Unbreakable Urtz has 50.2-50.6, 47.4-48.6; wow.gg gives 50.4, 47.5, a comment 50, 49. The time on the spot is an estimate for the combatants of the day. The notes for the Armored Bonehoof Tauralus cover Sabriel the Bonecleaver, who enters the same arena for Necrolords only.

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
