Hatches from a Necroray Egg, a rare find in the Tribute of the Ambitious and the Tribute of the Duty-Bound. Those are the caches of the Shadowlands covenant callings: the callings set in Maldraxxus pay one to a member of any covenant, and a Necrolord also gets one from the general callings. After three days the egg turns into an Oozing Necroray Egg, which opens into one of the three necroray mounts not yet owned.
Chance 0.5% once a day, so about 200 tries on average — Worked out, not read as such. Wowhead records the Necroray Egg in 2,350 of 155,480 opened Tributes of the Ambitious and in 1,009 of 68,062 Tributes of the Duty-Bound, 1.5% a tribute for both (3,359 in 223,542 together, read 2026-10-10, pooled since 2020). An egg opens into one of the three necroray mounts not yet owned, taken here as equally likely, so 1.5% / 3 = 0.5% a tribute for this one while none of the three is owned. The wiki says the egg was made more common in patch 10.2.7, by how much was not published, so the current chance is probably higher

Guide wow.gg: Bulbous Necroray
Before you go
- One finished calling that pays a Maldraxxus tribute, for each roll: three world quests in Maldraxxus, for example. A new calling is offered every day and stays for three days · about 0.35 h
- Three days of real time for the Necroray Egg to turn into the Oozing Necroray Egg · 3 days
In all: about 0.4 h of play, spread over 3 days, starting from nothing.
Getting there
/way Maldraxxus 50.2 70 - Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Oribos*
- Take the flight master to Maldraxxus
- Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Oribos*
- Take the flight master to Maldraxxus
/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight
line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.
Notes and sources
About 67 tributes are expected for a first egg at 1.5%. With one of the other two necrorays owned the chance for this one is 0.75% a tribute, with both owned the full 1.5%; with all three owned an egg holds a Gilded Slime instead (Wowhead comment, wiki). That an egg never repeats a mount rests on wow.gg and on that comment, and that the three are equally likely is an assumption. Reports from 2025-2026 on Wowhead run from three eggs in one day over 20 Necrolord characters to 378 tributes for the three.
Callings are per character. The hand-in is at the character's own covenant:
- Hermestes (Kyrian)
- Blodwyn (Night Fae)
- Rendle (Venthyr)
- Sergeant Romark (Necrolord; Wowhead has him at 47.4-48.6, 28.8-30.6 on the Seat of the Primus map, which is the place given above, on the Maldraxxus map)
For a Necrolord the wiki lists the tribute on Anima Salvage, Rare Resources, Training Our Forces, Troubles at Home and Storm the Maw as well as on the Maldraxxus callings. The 20 minutes on the spot are an estimate for three world quests. The journal names only the hatched egg.
