Hatches from a Necroray Egg, a rare find in the Tribute of the Ambitious and the Tribute of the Duty-Bound. Those are the caches of the Shadowlands covenant callings: the callings set in Maldraxxus pay one to a member of any covenant, and a Necrolord also gets one from the general callings. After three days the egg turns into an Oozing Necroray Egg, which opens into one of the three necroray mounts.
Chance 0.5% once a day, so about 200 tries on average — Worked out, not read as such: the egg's chance times this mount's share of the eggs. Wowhead records the Necroray Egg in 1.5% of opened tributes (3,359 in 223,542 over the Tribute of the Ambitious and the Tribute of the Duty-Bound; the counts are the ones read on 2026-10-10 for this guide's Bulbous Necroray record, 1438, and were not read again), and the Infested Necroray in 885 of 2,690 opened Oozing Necroray Eggs (read 2026-10-11), 32.9%, about one in three. 1.5% x 32.9% = 0.49% a tribute. Both counts are pooled since 2020; the wiki says the egg was made more common in patch 10.2.7, by how much was not published, so the current chance is probably higher

Guides Wowhead: Covenant Callings in Shadowlands · wow.gg: Infested Necroray
Before you go
- One finished calling that pays a Maldraxxus tribute, for each roll: three world quests in Maldraxxus, for example. A new calling is offered every day and stays for three days · about 0.35 h
- Three days of real time for the Necroray Egg to turn into the Oozing Necroray Egg · 3 days
In all: about 0.4 h of play, spread over 3 days, starting from nothing.
Getting there
/way Maldraxxus 50.2 70 - Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Oribos*
- Take the flight master to Maldraxxus
- Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Oribos*
- Take the flight master to Maldraxxus
/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight
line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.
Notes and sources
About 67 tributes are expected for a first egg at 1.5%, and about three eggs for this colour if each egg is an even draw of the three. It is the same egg as for the Bulbous and the Pestilent Necroray. Read for this mount: the wiki's pages for it and for the egg, Wowhead's page for it with its comments, Wowhead's callings guide and wow.gg's page for it.
Whether an egg can repeat a mount already owned is not settled:
- wow.gg's page for the Bulbous Necroray and a Wowhead comment say it never does, which would make this one certain by the third egg, and its chance 0.75% a tribute with one of the others owned and the full 1.5% with both
- wow.gg's page for this mount calls the result random and advises to keep farming 'until the Infested Necroray drops'
- Wowhead's 32.9% counts every looter and cannot tell the two apart
Wowhead's callings guide (last edited 2021) says a calling that helps Maldraxxus always pays one of the two tributes whatever the player's covenant, that a calling naming no covenant pays the chest of the player's own, so a Necrolord's general callings count too, and that 'you don't have to be a member of the Necrolord Covenant to loot or ride these'. It lists the Maldraxxus callings as:
- three world quests there (with or without the trainee)
- three Bonemetal from the zone's rares and treasures
- the defend-Maldraxxus bar
- the Chosen Champions world quest or a run of Plaguefall or the Theater of Pain
Callings are per character, are taken and handed in at the character's own sanctum, and cannot be abandoned.
Comments on the mount's page: any covenant, 'but the calling must be in Maldraxxus' (2024); one egg in all of Shadowlands and then two in three weeks, 'drop rate was definitely buffed' (2024).
wow.gg ties the Tribute of the Duty-Bound to 'kill calls', which Wowhead's guide does not bear out (it has a rare and an epic tribute, by the calling's difficulty). wow.gg also says moving the egg through the auction house or guild bank restarts its three days; the egg binds when picked up (wiki), so that was not followed.
The place given above is the one for the Bulbous Necroray: Sergeant Romark in the Seat of the Primus, placed on the Maldraxxus map; not read again. The 20 minutes on the spot are an estimate for three world quests. The journal names only the hatched egg. The mount asks for level 45 and binds when picked up (wiki).
Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
