How to get it

Hatches from a Necroray Egg, a rare find in the Tribute of the Ambitious and the Tribute of the Duty-Bound. Those are the caches of the Shadowlands covenant callings: the callings set in Maldraxxus pay one to a member of any covenant, and a Necrolord also gets one from the general callings. After three days the egg turns into an Oozing Necroray Egg, which opens into one of the three necroray mounts.

Chance 0.5% once a day, so about 200 tries on average — Worked out, not read as such. Wowhead records the Necroray Egg in 2,350 of 155,480 opened Tributes of the Ambitious and in 1,009 of 68,062 Tributes of the Duty-Bound, 1.5% a tribute for both (3,359 in 223,542 together; the counts are the ones read on 2026-10-10 for this guide's Bulbous Necroray record, 1438, and were not read again). An egg opens into one of the three necroray mounts, taken here as equally likely and as never repeating one already owned, so 1.5% / 3 = 0.5% a tribute for this one while none of the three is owned. The wiki says the egg was made more common in patch 10.2.7, by how much was not published, so the current chance is probably higher

Before you go

  • One finished calling that pays a Maldraxxus tribute, for each roll: three world quests in Maldraxxus, for example. A new calling is offered every day and stays for three days · about 0.35 h
  • Three days of real time for the Necroray Egg to turn into the Oozing Necroray Egg · 3 days

In all: about 0.4 h of play, spread over 3 days, starting from nothing.

Getting there

Seat of the Primus, Maldraxxus (the calling's tasks are in Maldraxxus; a Necrolord hands in here, to Sergeant Romark)
Maldraxxus · 50.2, 70
/way Maldraxxus 50.2 70
From Stormwind (Alliance) about 3.9 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Oribos*
  2. Take the flight master to Maldraxxus
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 3.8 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Oribos*
  2. Take the flight master to Maldraxxus

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

About 67 tributes are expected for a first egg at 1.5%. The egg is the same as the Bulbous Necroray's.

Callings are per character, and the tribute is handed in at the character's own covenant. For a Necrolord that is Sergeant Romark in the Seat of the Primus, the place given on the Maldraxxus map (as for the Bulbous Necroray). Wowhead's guide (updated 2024) names only the Tribute of the Ambitious, from 'A Calling to Maldraxxus', picked up in the covenant hall; the wiki names both tributes. The 20 minutes on the spot are an estimate for three world quests.

The chance for this one, if an egg never repeats a mount:

  • with one of the other two necrorays owned: 0.75% a tribute
  • with both owned: the full 1.5%
  • with all three owned the egg is said to hold a Gilded Slime instead

The Bulbous Necroray's notes have this from wow.gg's page for that mount and a Wowhead comment. wow.gg's page for this mount calls the result 'purely random' and speaks of 2-3 eggs for this colour. That the three are equally likely is an assumption either way. wow.gg also puts the egg at 'around 1.5-3%' a chest, without a source.

The journal names only the hatched egg. The mount asks for level 45 and binds when picked up (wiki).

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
