Loot an Empty Magma Shell from the lava snails and slugs of the Waking Shores; the Lavaslurpers in the lava flats south of the Obsidian Citadel drop it most often. Carry the shell to the Empowered Snail at the bottom of the lava pool in Scalecracker Peaks (71.1, 25.1) and click the snail: a 20-second channel, Embiggening Snail, teaches the mount.
Chance 2.43% per try, so about 41 tries on average — Per kill, for the shell, which always becomes the mount. Wowhead (read 2026-10-10): 465 shells in 19,153 recorded loots of the Lavaslurper with id 193138, the pocket at 21.8-22.6, 67-72. The second Lavaslurper id (186623), spread east from there to 29, 76, has 565 in 61,923 (0.91%); the two pooled are 1,030 in 81,076 (1.27%). Lava Slug 405 in 43,501 (0.93%), Lava Snail 176 in 25,131 (0.70%), Spiteful Slug 168 in 22,115 (0.76%), Basalt Shell 65 in 6,144 (1.06%), Igneous Mollusc in Zaralek Cavern 131 in 18,021 (0.73%).

Notes and sources
About 41 kills are expected at 2.43%, or about 110 at 0.91%, the figure for the second item; the Lavaslurpers are few and respawn, so the minute on the spot per kill is an estimate.
Two places are involved. The place given is the farm; the mount itself is handed over at the snail on the far side of the zone.
The snail lies on the bottom of a lava pool, and the channel is done while the lava burns. The toy Everlasting Horn of Lavaswimming (from the Siege on Dragonbane Keep event) takes the damage away, and Wowhead comments up to 2025 report class immunities and damage reductions doing the same. The comments give /way 71.15 25.5 for the rock to enter from, and suggest targeting the snail first to see that it is up. The wiki's item page gives the channel as 16 seconds, its pages for the mount and the snail as 20.
The shell also falls from the larger snails of the same lava fields and from the hunt rare Gamgus (Wowhead comments of 2024 and 2025). Wowhead's tooltip shows no binding on the Empty Magma Shell, so the shell can be traded and sold on the auction house, although the mount it turns into binds; the guide's tradeable mark, taken from the tooltip, will not show that.
