How to get it

Craft it at the mount Synthesis Forge in Zereth Mortis from Schematic: Unsuccessful Prototype Fleetpod, 300 Genesis Motes, a Helicid Lattice and a Tools of Incomprehensible Experimentation. The schematic is won in the Camber Alcove, a hidden room reached through the Gravid Repose's Locus Shifts, by steering a snail prototype through five golden rings; the Tools are a rare drop from Lihuvim in the Sepulcher of the First Ones raid.

Time there about 5 min a visit

Before you go

  • Cypher research timers: Aealic 18 h, Dealic 3 d 18 h, Sopranian 5 d 18 h, one after another · 10.25 days
  • Zereth Mortis campaign to chapter 3, which opens the Cypher Console, and 470 Cyphers of the First Ones (Metrial 5, Aealic 45, Dealic 200, Sopranian 220) · about 5 h
  • The quests that open the mount forge once Sopranian Understanding is researched: Finding Tahli and the chain after it (The Final Song), then after a daily reset A New Architect. The forge is in the Protoform Repository (70.2, 28.6) · about 1.5 h over 2 days
  • Zereth Mortis campaign on through chapter 6, the achievement A Means to an End (its one criterion is the quest Arbiter in the Making): only then can the rune that opens the Camber Alcove be used · about 4 h
  • Altonian Understanding researched at the Cypher Console: 160 more Cyphers of the First Ones and a timer of 5 days 18 hours, after Aealic Understanding · about 1 h over 5.75 days
  • The Camber Alcove opened once: touch the Camber Alcove Arrangement, a rune at 47.7, 34.5 on the outer back side of the Vessel's room in the Resonant Peaks, reached by flying or from the Ultimus Locus · about 0.25 h
  • The schematic: gather 60 Cosmic Energy in the Resonant Peaks, enter the Gravid Repose (50.6, 31.8), take its Locus Shift to the Interior Locus and there the second one, the Arcae Locus, to the Camber Alcove. Speak to the Inert Prototype to ride a small snail that moves by itself: steer it through five golden rings and keep clear of the piles of Sodiate Ash, three hits end the try. The Prototype Schematic then appears on the floor; the schematic in it starts Schematic Reassimilation: Unsuccessful Prototype Fleetpod, handed in at the forge · about 0.5 h
  • A Tools of Incomprehensible Experimentation from Lihuvim in the Sepulcher of the First Ones raid (entrance at 81.0, 53.3 in Zereth Mortis; on Raid Finder the wing Cornerstone of Creation, entered through Ta'elfar in Oribos at 41.5, 71.2): about a 6% drop, with one loot per difficulty each week for a character, so some 16 or 17 kills are to be expected · about 3 h over 4 weeks
  • 300 Genesis Motes (most creatures in Zereth Mortis) and a Helicid Lattice, a low-chance drop from the zone's snails, the Overgrown Helicids and the rare Orixal among them · about 2 h

In all: about 17.3 h of play, spread over 4 weeks, starting from nothing.

Getting there

Mount Synthesis Forge, Protoform Repository
Zereth Mortis · 70.2, 28.6
/way Zereth Mortis 70.2 28.6
From Stormwind (Alliance) about 2.4 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Oribos*
  2. Speak to Tal-Inara within Oribos to travel to Zereth Mortis
  3. Fly the rest of the way
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 2.4 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Oribos*
  2. Speak to Tal-Inara within Oribos to travel to Zereth Mortis
  3. Fly the rest of the way

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

The journal says only 'Protoform Synthesis'. The recipe is 300 Genesis Motes, 1 Tools of Incomprehensible Experimentation and 1 Helicid Lattice by the wiki, Wowhead's guide and Wowhead's data for the craft (spell 365074); a 2024 comment thought it had been 3 Tools before.

Two things make this the slowest of the forge's mounts. The first is the Tools, which the Prototype Leaper's notes cover at length:

  • they bind to the Warband, so other characters can hunt them
  • the quest A New Architect gives one, once for the account, which the Deathrunner is meant to use; spending it here would leave the Deathrunner waiting for a drop
  • an Olea Cache holds one very rarely

The second is the schematic. What the Camber Alcove asks for is not settled. Wowhead's guide says Altonian Understanding and the achievement A Means to an End; the comment that first described the room (2022, the best-rated on the mount's page) asks for the forge's research (Metrial, Aealic, Dealic and Sopranian), the mount forge unlocked and the same achievement, and does not mention Altonian. Both are counted here, which may be six days too many. The wiki has the achievement as account-wide since patch 11.0.0; the Bronzewing Vespoid's notes have a 2024 comment that each character needs the chapter for itself to see such a rune.

The rune stands outside, on the back of the Vessel's room. A 2022 reply says to fly round to it if the room can no longer be entered, and the comment gives the Ultimus Locus, the top floor of the Gravid Repose, as the way for a character that cannot fly. Flying in Zereth Mortis is the account-wide achievement Unlocking the Secrets (see the Prototype Leaper), of which A Means to an End is a part (wiki).

The game in the alcove (a 2022 comment):

  • each ring gives a stack, and the fifth wins and reveals the schematic
  • each pile of ash hit gives a stack as well, and the third throws the rider out to start again
  • a second button stops the snail to aim and then shoots it forward in a straight line, seldom worth it

Two 2022 comments could not click the Inert Prototype although they had done everything in the zone; nobody answered why. The wiki has no page for the Camber Alcove and says of the schematic only that it is in a 'Prototype Schematic'.

Wowhead's guide says the rare reagents of mounts only show up once the Sopranian research and the forge quests are done, and that lattices pets use too, the Helicid Lattice among them, drop from the Dealic research on.

The mount shares its research gate of about 10 days and the forge unlock with the other Protoform Synthesis mounts, the Tools with the Deathrunner and the Prototype Leaper, and the lattice with Serenade and the Bronze and Scarlet Helicids. The raid is not given as the instance because the mount is made at the forge; the raid visits are one of the requirements. Guides give two spots for the forge: Wowhead's guide 68.5, 30.1 for the Protoform Repository's cave, comments 70.2, 28.6 for the forge itself, which is used here as for this guide's other forge mounts.

The mount lives up to its name: the wiki says it gives no speed bonus on land and can be used from level 1, and commenters measured 110% of running speed (2022). The item binds when picked up and asks for level 10 (wiki).

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
