How to get it

Rare find, as the item Spectral Mawrat's Tail, in the Mawsworn Supply Chests of Zereth Mortis: small treasure chests that come and go at fixed points across the northern half of the zone, where the Mawsworn are (Wowhead maps 20 points, a wow.gg guide lists over 30). Any chest can hold it, there is no daily limit, and a chest stays open to everyone for a minute or two after it is first opened.

Chance 0.53% per try, so about 189 tries on average — Wowhead item page (read 2026-10-10): 779 tails in 148,293 recorded openings of the Mawsworn Supply Chest, 0.525%. The tooltip gives no figure. Players' counts agree: a commenter who opened 605 chests calls it about 0.5%, and wow.gg says roughly 0.5%

Getting there

Mawsworn Supply Chests at the pyramid (three chest points a few steps apart)
Zereth Mortis · 60.1, 32.3
/way Zereth Mortis 60.1 32.3
From Stormwind (Alliance) about 2.2 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Oribos*
  2. Speak to Tal-Inara within Oribos to travel to Zereth Mortis
  3. Fly the rest of the way
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 2.2 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Oribos*
  2. Speak to Tal-Inara within Oribos to travel to Zereth Mortis
  3. Fly the rest of the way

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

About 190 chests are expected at 0.525%; reports on Wowhead run from about 50 to over 1,000. The time on the spot is one chest, an estimate from a 2022 Wowhead comment that counted 5 to 20 chests an hour standing at the pyramid (60, 32) and changing realm through the group finder; flying laps of the points on one realm will be slower.

Chest points from Wowhead's tooltip for the chest (object 375363):

  • around the pyramid: 59.4, 31.4; 60.1, 32.3; 60.9, 30.4
  • further north-east: 57.6, 23.0; 59.9, 16.7; 63.0, 24.9; 63.3, 21.0; 67.6, 29.6
  • in the north: 46.8, 12.4; 47.8, 1.4; 50.8, 9.9; 51.7, 8.2
  • in the west: 46.0, 24.3; 46.7, 26.8
  • in the south: 45.4, 46.4; 48.1, 48.2; 48.8, 42.4; 50.1, 44.6; 50.7, 50.4; 58.4, 40.3 (a 2023 commenter stands at 48.7, 46.1 with five chests in reach)

The wiki names the Dread Portal, Antecedent Isle and the Provis Strata as the areas.

Respawn: a 2022 commenter saw a new chest on Antecedent Isle about every 15-20 minutes on each realm; wow.gg says each point has its own timer of 5 minutes to 1.5 hours, and that all are up after the weekly reset. An opened chest leaves the minimap but can still be opened for a minute or two, so each point is worth checking by eye (comments). It does not have to be a character's first chest of the day (a 2022 comment).

Every chest also gives Cosmic Flux, Cyphers of the First Ones and anima (wiki). The mount is still dropping: Wowhead comments of 2026. wow.gg says flying in Zereth Mortis comes with the achievement Unlocking the Secrets; that was not checked, and flying is taken as available, as for this guide's other Zereth Mortis mounts. The journal files the mount under Achievement, but its own text and every source say drop.

Confidence in this entry: high. Looked up in 2026.
