A chance find in the reward bags of Researchers Under Fire, the public event at the Ruins of Drekazera in the Sulfur Wastes of Zaralek Cavern. The event starts at half past every hour and runs for up to 25 minutes; the bag a player gets goes by how many of its 12 objectives were completed. The first bag of the week at each level of completion, a Researcher's Gift, has the better chance; the bags for repeating a level, Scrounged Goods, can hold the mount too, at a much lower chance.
Chance 2.47% once a week, so about 40 tries on average — Wowhead's item page (read 2026-10-10), mounts per bag opened: Indebted Researcher's Gift (all 12 objectives) 1,013 in 41,039 (2.47%), the figure given here; Thankful Researcher's Gift (9-11) 256 in 7,604 (3.37%); Appreciative Researcher's Gift (6-8) 273 in 10,999 (2.48%); Researcher's Gift (3-5) 48 in 10,772 (0.45%); and the repeat bags Indebted Researcher's Scrounged Goods 20 in 3,556 (0.56%) and Thankful Researcher's Scrounged Goods 7 in 1,585 (0.44%). The wiki says about 3% for the three better gifts

- Take the portal from Orgrimmar to Valdrakken*
- Enter Zaralek Cavern through the tunnels
- Fly the rest of the way
/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight
line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.
Notes and sources
The event ends by talking to Rannan Korren at 47.7, 57.9 (wiki). It runs 25 minutes, and the level of the gift goes by how much of it gets done; 2024 and 2026 Wowhead comments say few players still turn up for it.
The weekly lockout is that of the gifts: a Researcher's Gift on the first clear of the week at each level of completion, Scrounged Goods on repeats (wiki). A 2023 comment says all three better bags can be had on one character in a week, and another 2023 one got the mount from a repeat bag, so the event can be run every hour at the lower chance. About 40 top gifts are expected at 2.47%.
The wiki's table of levels:
- 12 objectives: Indebted
- 9-11: Thankful
- 6-8: Appreciative
- 3-5: the plain Researcher's Gift
Two comments (2023, 2025) tell of a bag landing in the bags of a player who was only flying past as the event ended. A bag can hold two copies (2023 and 2024 comments). Comments of 2024 and 2025 report drops; one of 2025 was at 57 tries without it.
Whether a week's gift is per character or for the warband was not established. No Wowhead guide to the event was found, so the wiki's page, which lists the stages, is linked. The item that teaches the mount is called Flaming Shalewing Subject 01.
Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
