Sold as Boulder Hauler Reins by Ponzo, the Barterer Extraordinaire in Loamm, the niffen town in Zaralek Cavern, for 85 Barter Boulders. That is his price once Renown 12 with the Loamm Niffen is reached and the quest Bartering Boulders has switched his trade from Barter Bricks to Barter Boulders; before that he asks 170 Barter Bricks for the same reins. Boulders are found one at a time in the cavern's chests, offerings and dig rewards, and at Renown 20 the niffen quartermaster sells them for Dragon Isles Supplies.

Before you go
- Renown 12 with the Loamm Niffen, then the quest Bartering Boulders from Newsy, the snail outside the central building in Loamm (56.4, 56.6), handed in to Ponzo: only then does he take boulders. Bartering itself opens at Renown 3 with Newsy's Care to Barter?, Ponzo's Get Rich Quick and Bartering 101. Renown is 2,500 reputation a level, from the cavern's world quests, the niffen's own quests, zone events, the weekly Researchers Under Fire event, the weekly quest A Worthy Ally: Loamm Niffen and sniffenseeking digs with Myrrit · about 7 h over 8 days
- 85 Barter Boulders: 11 come with the switch (1 from Bartering Boulders, 10 from Newsy's Bundle of Boulders), which leaves 74. One at a time from the cavern's Smelly Treasure Chests, Ritual Offerings and Waterlogged Bundles (about every second one holds a boulder), from the Gathered Niffen Resources of a sniffenseeking dig, from the special finds of digs and the niffen's profession and weekly quests (1 each); 10 in each Brimming Loamm Niffen Supply Satchel, the cache for each 2,500 reputation past Renown 20. They can also be bought: 100 Dragon Isles Supplies each from Harlowe Marl in Loamm at Renown 20 (7,400 for the 74), 10 Unearthed Fragrant Coins each from Spinsoa, or 3 Barter Bricks each from Ponzo · about 8 h
In all: about 15 h of play, spread over 8 days, starting from nothing.

Notes and sources
The journal's and the tooltip's 'Cost: 85' is 85 Barter Boulders (items, not a currency). Ponzo stands at 58.0, 53.8 (Wowhead comments and wow.gg; the wiki has 58.1, 53.8); wow.gg (updated 2026) adds that Get Rich Quick has to be done before he shows his full stock.
Ponzo has two prices for the reins: Wowhead's data has 170 of item 204985 (Barter Brick) and 85 of item 205188 (Barter Boulder), and the wiki (pages edited 2025 and 2026) puts the first below Renown 12 and the second from 12. This guide follows the boulder price because it is the one the journal shows and the one most accounts will meet. It is not the only way: a character whose Ponzo still trades in bricks can buy the reins for 170 Barter Bricks from Renown 3, and Renown 12 is then not needed. Blizzard Watch put the boulders at Renown 20; the wiki, wow.gg and every Wowhead comment say 12.
The switch from bricks to boulders is by character and has to be triggered. 2024 commenters at Renown 20 (the reputation has been Warband-wide since patch 11.0) found Ponzo still asking bricks, and their chests still giving bricks, until they took Bartering Boulders (quest 75728) from Newsy at about 56.4, 56.6 and handed it in to Ponzo. A 2023 comment says the quest only appears once a first boulder is found or bought, and a 2024 one that a character needs Renown 12 to spend boulders at all.
After the switch every source that gave a brick gives a boulder, and bricks can only be turned into boulders at 3 for 1, so bricks should be spent before it ('But spend your bricks first!', 2024 comment); 2023 players point out that the reins go from 170 bricks to the worth of 255.
Buying boulders: Wowhead's sold-by list for the boulder has Harlowe Marl, the Loamm Niffen Quartermaster, at 100 Dragon Isles Supplies (currency 2003), which commenters and wow.gg tie to Renown 20, so 8,500 supplies buy the mount outright, 7,400 after the 11 boulders of the two quests. Dragon Isles Supplies can be moved within the Warband (2024 comments), which makes this the short way for an account that played Dragonflight. Spinsoa, the Unearthed Fragrant Coin Exchange, sells a boulder for 10 coins; whether that asks a renown was not established.
The hours for finding boulders are the weak figure: Wowhead's counts show how often a container holds one, not how many containers an hour can be opened, and the sources differ on amounts for bricks (Blizzard Watch, 2023: 5 bricks from each of Kayann's delivery quests; Wowhead's quest data: 1 brick or 1 boulder). A 2024 comment says an Expedition Shovel in the bags makes the Smelly Trash Piles of the cavern visible, with bricks or boulders nearly every time; a 2024 reply got none. Three dig maps a week come with play, and Ponzo sells a Bartered Dig Map for 1 boulder (3 bricks).
The mount is one of the shalewings that open Imagiwing in the Emerald Dream (whose notes give the price in bricks). The wiki has the reins asking for level 45 and binding when picked up; added in patch 10.1.0. The guide linked is Wowhead's renown guide, as for the Calescent Shalewing and the Morsel Sniffer; no Wowhead guide to the bartering itself was found.
