How to get it

Dropped by Alunira, a rare cloudrook circling the peak of Dhar Oztan in the west of the Isle of Dorn, for the player who breaks her shield. The shield comes off only with a Storm Vessel, made by combining 10 Crackling Shards, a very rare drop from any creature on the Isle of Dorn. Use the vessel on her, kill her and loot the mount. Do not help anyone else kill her earlier the same day: a character that has already looted her that day gets nothing from its own vessel.

Guides Wowhead: The War Within Isle of Dorn Rares and Treasures · wow.gg: Alunira · Method: Alunira Mount Guide

Before you go

  • 10 Crackling Shards, combined into a Storm Vessel. Any creature on the Isle of Dorn can drop one: ordinary creatures at about 1 in 1,000 kills (the bees, wolves and honeyslimes around the Cinderbrew Meadery, 73.2, 41.5, are the usual place), the zone's named rares at about 1 in 100. Four of those rares come back within minutes and can be killed over and over: Sandres the Relicbearer (62.8, 68.4), Springbubble (58.7, 60.5), Bloodmaw (42.4, 76.6) and Rustul Titancap (36.7, 75.0). The shards bind to the Warband, so every character's finds count · about 14 h

In all: about 14 h of play, starting from nothing.

/way Isle of Dorn 23.2 58.4
From Stormwind (Alliance) about 1.6 min of travel

  2. Fly the rest of the way
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 1.6 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Orgrimmar to Dornogal
  2. Fly the rest of the way

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

Use the Storm Vessel on her alone, and on a day the character has not killed her. The mount is personal loot for the player who used the vessel and is certain for that player: Wowhead's guide ('Only the person who uses the Storm Vessel on her will be able to loot the mount'), the wiki, the best-rated comments and a 2026 reply all say so.

The trap is the daily loot lock. 2024 comments (the best-rated on the shard's page) tell of players who helped a friend kill her and then used their own vessel the same day, got no loot and lost the vessel; Blizzard's support called it a bug in 2024 replies, and nothing read says it was fixed. Other reports: Replies put the two 2025 cases down to the same causes, which was not confirmed.

  • 2025: a vessel used and only a grey item looted
  • 2025: a vessel used in a party for a friend, with no mount for either
  • 2024: a player who had lost a vessel that way could loot the mount on someone else's later kill

Place: Wowhead's tooltip for her (npc 219281) gives 23.0-23.2, 58.4-58.6 and the comments' waypoint is 23.18, 58.45 (#2248); Wowhead's guide and the wiki have 16.6, 61.2 and 16.8, 61.2, which is not where the tooltip puts her. She flies around the very top of the mountain, is a level 80 rare, and has no respawn wait (wow.gg: 'always present').

Wowhead's tooltip figure of 64.47% is 410 mounts in 636 recorded loots of Alunira and is not a chance: it pools everyone who looted her, helpers without a vessel included (2025 replies say the same), so no drop chance is set.

The Crackling Shard binds to the Warband, is Unique (10) and stacks to 10 (Wowhead's tooltip). A 2026 comment says the Storm Vessel is soulbound, so the ten should be combined on the character that is to loot the mount.

Wowhead's dropped-by list for the shard shows 200 creatures and one object. A few creatures stand above the rares on small counts (Pactsworn Fraycaller 58 in 1,535, 3.8%; what and where they are was not looked up), and commenters of 2024 and 2025 name delves on the isle as a source as well. The rares that scale with the character are tagged as rares only on a character's first kill (Wowhead's guide) but go on dropping shards at about the same rate (a 2024 comment: seven shards in 693 kills of Sandres and Springbubble). A 2025 comment describes leaving a pet class beside Sandres, who returns every 60 to 100 seconds, with shards arriving by mail, and comments up to 2026 repeat it.

Luck swings widely: one player needed 4,500 kills for a single shard, others had none after 6,000 ordinary kills (2026). A 2026 comment claiming a raised drop rate is contradicted in its replies. Warcraft Tavern's table of rates (Escaped Cutthroat 5%) does not match Wowhead's count (51 in 6,098, 0.84%) and is not linked.

Guides:

  • Wowhead's Isle of Dorn rares guide (2025) has her row and the rares' waypoints, but the western coordinates
  • wow.gg's (2026) is written for this mount
  • Method's dates from 2024

The item binds when picked up. Added in patch 11.0.2.

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
