Look it up on WowheadHow to get it
Sold by Stone Guard Mukar, the Horde's Wintergrasp Quartermaster, in the courtyard of Wintergrasp Fortress for 15 Marks of Honor. He stands there only while the Horde holds Wintergrasp.
Time there about 2 min a visit
Before you go
- 15 Marks of Honor: awarded by battlegrounds, arenas and other instanced PvP, and sold 5 at a time for 2,000 Honor by Honor vendors · about 3 h
- The Horde holding Wintergrasp at the time of the visit. Control is settled by the zone's own battle, and the side that wins keeps the fortress until the next one
In all: about 3 h of play, starting from nothing.
Getting there
/way Wintergrasp 51.6 17.4 - Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Crystalsong Forest*
- Fly the rest of the way
/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight
line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.
Notes and sources
The mount is shared across the factions: the wiki dates that to patch 5.1.0, and Wowhead comments of 2013 and 2021 say that buying one side's mammoth gave the other side's as well. So an account that has bought the Alliance's Black War Mammoth from Knight Dameron should already have this one, and a player may buy on whichever side holds the fortress. The 2021 commenter did exactly that, finding the zone Alliance-held on the Horde character and buying on an Alliance one, 15 Marks at 51.8, 17.4.
The journal's cost of 15 is Marks of Honor (wiki, since patch 7.0.3; Wowhead's sold-by list, as read in 2026). Marks of Honor can be earned on any character of the Warband (wiki). Needs level 17 and Apprentice Riding (wiki, since patch 9.0.1).
The open question is the same as for the Alliance's mammoth: who holds Wintergrasp and how quickly it changes hands today. No report from 2024 to 2026 was found. Wowhead's newest comment on buying it is that one of 2021 (patch 9.1), and one of 2022 says the vendor refused a player holding 65 Marks with 'you do not have the required item', unexplained.
wow.gg's guide (updated 2026) gives a battle every 2 hours 30 minutes and a price of 15 Wintergrasp Marks of Honor won in the battle itself. The wiki's price history runs from a Wrath-era currency through 2,000 Honor (patch 4.0.1) to 15 Marks of Honor (patch 7.0.3), the ordinary PvP currency. So the guide's account of how the marks are earned is not followed, and its timing is not relied on either.
Coordinates are Wowhead's tooltip for Mukar (51.4-51.6, 17.4-17.6), which is also where the Alliance's quartermaster is recorded; the wiki gives 51.7, 11.4, 'directly east of the main doors in the central courtyard'. Wowhead's sold-by list also names Champion Ros'slai (twice) and Marshal Magruder at the same price; where and when they can be bought from was not checked.
The Grand Black War Mammoth is a different mount, a drop in the Vault of Archavon.
Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
