How to get it

Dropped every time by the Time-Lost Proto-Drake, a rare proto-drake that flies over The Storm Peaks. It shares four spawn points, its flight paths and one spawn timer with the rare Vyragosa, who appears far more often and drops no mount; only one of the two is up at a time, and only the first player, or party of five or fewer, to hit the drake can loot it.

Time there about 10 min a visit

Before you go

  • The Time-Lost Proto-Drake being up, and being first to hit it. A spawn comes 2 to 8 hours after the body of the last one (either rare) has gone, at one of four points: Frozen Lake (31.5, 70.0), Waterfall (35.0, 76.5), Brunn Village (51.1, 71.2) and Ulduar Ravine (52.3, 35.0). Most spawns are Vyragosa, and killing her starts the next wait (skinning her clears the body at once) · about 45 h

In all: about 45 h of play, starting from nothing.

Getting there

Time-Lost Proto-Drake, Frozen Lake spawn point (one of four)
The Storm Peaks · 31.5, 70
/way The Storm Peaks 31.5 70
From Stormwind (Alliance) about 1.4 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Crystalsong Forest*
  2. Fly the rest of the way
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 1.3 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Crystalsong Forest*
  2. Fly the rest of the way

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

The wait is the whole cost and cannot be planned; the hours given are waiting, much of it away from the keyboard, and the figure is rough. The place given above is the Frozen Lake point, from which the wiki says the Ulduar Ravine and Waterfall paths can also be watched. The time on site is one lap of the four points (5 to 7 minutes by wow.gg) and the kill. The drake usually flies out of reach of the ground (wiki).

Wowhead's guide (by xisthena, from the Secret Finding Discord's data, updated 2026) on the timer:

  • it runs from the moment the body disappears: 30 minutes after a Vyragosa kill (at once if she is skinned) and 30 to 50 minutes after a Time-Lost kill
  • a few spawns have been seen half an hour to an hour outside the 2-8 hours
  • the four points are equally likely
  • the zone unloads when no player has been in it for 15 minutes, after which the timer starts from nothing

Each War Mode setting, and Chromie Time, has its own copy of the zone with its own spawns.

Since patch 8.1.5 only the first group to hit the drake gets loot: a party of five or fewer, everyone invited, in the zone and nearby before the first hit. A raid group cannot loot it, and neither can a Class Trial character. It enrages 4 to 5 minutes into the fight.

Wowhead's tooltip shows a 98.73% drop chance for the reins; its guide and the wiki both say 100%. The reins bind when picked up.

The share of spawns that are the drake was never published: wow.gg's one in 8 to 10 names no source, and Wowhead's guide says only that Vyragosa spawns far more often.

The wiki's page for the drake still gives the old timer (no spawn for 6 hours after a kill, usually 12 to 20); Wowhead's guide says it was 6-22 hours in Wrath of the Lich King, 4-12 in Warlords of Draenor and 2-8 now. Warcraft Secrets gives the same timer and the same four points, within a point of these.

Wowhead's tooltip for the drake maps sightings from 28.0, 65.4 to 41.8, 84.4, which are stretches of its flight paths rather than spawn points.

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
