How to get it

Fished up, very rarely, from schools of fish: the pools of Northrend, of the Cataclysm zones and of Pandaria, and the Shipwreck Debris around Darkmoon Island. It does not come from open water. The stop is Lake Kum'uya in the Borean Tundra, which is ringed with Musselback Sculpin schools. It is also a rare drop of the Cavedweller murlocs called up at the fishing pond of a Draenor garrison with a level 3 Fishing Shack.

Chance 2.5% per try, so about 40 tries on average — Worked out, not read as such. Wowhead's item page (read 2026-10-11) records fishing catches by zone: in the six Northrend zones 907 turtles in 5,450,032 (Howling Fjord 291 in 1,518,944, Borean Tundra 169 in 1,252,026, Grizzly Hills 138 in 436,921, Sholazar Basin 128 in 1,137,646, Crystalsong Forest 104 in 662,589, Dragonblight 77 in 441,906), 0.0166% a catch or about 1 in 6,000. 2.5% is that figure for one hour's visit at about 150 pool catches (1 - (1 - 0.000166)^150); the 150 is an estimate, set below the 226 an hour a player reports from the garrison pond (4,980 casts in 22 hours) because schools empty after a few catches and have to be ridden between. The zone counts take in open-water casts, which cannot give the turtle, so a pool cast is probably better than this: the best zone, Grizzly Hills, stands at 0.032%, and the long-standing estimate in Wowhead's comments is about 1 in 5,000. The tooltip gives no figure

Time there about 1 h a visit

In all: about 0.1 h of play, starting from nothing.

  2. Fly the rest of the way
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 1.7 min of travel
  1. Take the zeppelin from Orgrimmar to Borean Tundra*
  2. Fly the rest of the way

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

One visit is counted as an hour at the pools. At Wowhead's rate about 6,000 pool catches are expected, some 40 hours; there is no lockout. What players post on Wowhead runs from the fifth cast to more than 10,000:

  • 2,250 casts at Lake Kum'uya (2025, the comment that gives the 51, 44 of the place above)
  • 5,487 in Grizzly Hills (2026)
  • 3,500 in the Valley of the Four Winds (2026)
  • 1,429 in Howling Fjord (2024)
  • about 10,000 at Darkmoon Island (2020)

Any school in the zones named can give it: Wowhead lists 45 kinds of pool, the Pool of Blood and both Shipwreck Debris among them, and catches in 21 zones. Outside Northrend the recorded zone rates are lower, which may only mean more open-water fishing there:

  • Uldum 696 in 10,791,030
  • Twilight Highlands 650 in 9,153,527
  • Krasarang Wilds 403 in 7,244,085
  • Darkmoon Island 110 in 7,105,427

Other spots players name:

  • the river west of Amberpine Lodge in Grizzly Hills (38.3, 34.7; 2022)
  • Winter's Breath Lake north of Skorn in Howling Fjord (2024)
  • the Deep Sea Monsterbelly and Moonglow Cuttlefish schools and the Nettlefish schools of Sholazar Basin (a much-rated 2009 comment, which starts with Lake Kum'uya too)
  • Pandaria's 'fish of the day' pools (2021)

The garrison way: a level 3 Fishing Shack (opened by the achievement Draenor Angler, 100 of each of the seven enormous Draenor fish; 100 Garrison Resources and 500 gold; wiki) lets the garrison pond give Lunarfall Carp (Alliance) or Frostdeep Minnows (Horde), and one thrown back calls a Cavedweller. Wowhead has the turtle 1,249 times in 575,353 loots of the Lunarfall Cavedweller (0.22%) and 883 in 466,469 of the Frostdeep one (0.19%).

Players caught a carp on about one cast in twenty (244 in 4,980 and 39 in 717, both in 2022), which makes a garrison cast about 0.01%, no better than a pool cast. But since patch 7.0.3 a Cavedweller is personal loot for everyone in the raid (wiki), and players fishing the pond together report the turtle within one to three hours (comments of 2021 to 2025). A 2026 one reports over 2,000 Frostdeep Cavedwellers without it.

Also named and not counted here: the Hyper-Compressed Ocean toy, reward of the achievement Secret Fish and Where to Find Them (wiki), and garrison shipyard missions with the Tuskarr Fishing Net (comments of 2013 and 2022).

The catch goes straight into the bags, so keep a slot free (comments of 2009 and 2025). The item binds when picked up (wiki).

The journal says only 'Profession: Fishing', and neither the wiki nor warcraftmounts.com gives a chance. wow.gg's guide (updated 2026) says 0.01-0.03% and 40 to 200 hours without a source.

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
