How to get it

Rare find in the Heart of Wind, the chest that appears when Al'Akir is defeated. He is the last of the two encounters of the Throne of the Four Winds, after the Conclave of Wind, and the chest can hold the reins on Normal and on Heroic, at either raid size. The entrance is a platform high in the air over the south of Uldum.

Chance 1.56% once a week, so about 64 tries on average — Wowhead (read 2026-10-10) records the reins in the chest, not on Al'Akir, under three object ids: 1,399 in 71,625 loots (1.95%), 559 in 51,141 (1.09%) and 70 in 7,299 (0.96%). The figure given is the three pooled, 2,028 in 130,065. The item's tooltip carries no chance

Getting there

Uldum · 38.2, 80.7
/way Uldum 38.2 80.7
From Stormwind (Alliance) about 2.7 min of travel

  2. Fly the rest of the way
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 2.7 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Caverns of Time*
  2. Fly the rest of the way

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

About 64 kills expected at the pooled 1.56%, one a week for each character. The lockout is taken as weekly from the comments, which speak of the weekly reset and of running several characters; whether Normal and Heroic can both be looted in one week was not looked up.

The entrance, from the game's table, hangs in the sky, so it is reached by flying. The time on the spot is an estimate for both encounters; a 2024 comment puts the whole trip from a capital, through the Uldum portal and out again, at under five minutes. A 2015 comment warns a character far above the raid's level not to kill Al'Akir before his platform shatters, or the chest may end up out of reach; whether that still holds was not checked.

Wowhead does not say which chest belongs to which of the four modes. The most-looted one (object 207894, 1.95%) holds the Crown and Shoulders of the Forlorn tokens, taken here to be the Heroic ones, so Heroic may give nearly twice the chance of the other two chests. That reading was not confirmed, and the higher figure may instead come from the Collector's Bounty event of July 2025, when the chance was raised and many players ran the raid: several comments from then report the drake within a few kills. On Al'Akir himself Wowhead lists the reins for all four modes without counts.

Players' own counts in the comments run from the 2nd and 4th kill to 155, 193 and 229 kills.

The item asks for level 27 (wiki). The wiki and Wowhead also name the Black Market and its Unclaimed Black Market Container as places the reins turn up; that is not the route described.

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
