How to get it

Poseidus, a rare seahorse in Vashj'ir, drops the Reins of Poseidus every time he is killed. He turns up at one of five spots, four in the Shimmering Expanse and one in the Abyssal Depths, and is gone again as soon as he is killed.

Time there about 4 h a visit

Before you go

Nothing to unlock first: go there and it is yours.

Getting there

Poseidus, north-western spawn point in the Shimmering Expanse (one of five)
Shimmering Expanse · 45.3, 49.5
/way Shimmering Expanse 45.3 49.5
From Stormwind (Alliance) about 1.6 min of travel
  1. Fly there
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 1.6 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Western Earthshrine to Vashj'ir*
  2. Fly the rest of the way

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

The wait is the whole cost and cannot be planned: the kill itself takes a moment, and whoever finds him first gets him. Wowhead counts 2,028 reins in 2,049 loots of Poseidus (98.98%, also the tooltip's figure), and the wiki calls the drop guaranteed. A class-trial character got no loot from him (a 2022 comment).

Spawn points, as the centres of Wowhead's recorded sightings:

  • Shimmering Expanse 45.3, 49.5 (the place given above)
  • Shimmering Expanse 39.1, 67.2
  • Shimmering Expanse 57.5, 82.5
  • Shimmering Expanse 66.3, 43.1
  • Abyssal Depths 41.0, 74.6

wow.gg lists four different, approximate spots in the Shimmering Expanse (50, 48; 57, 38; 60, 55; 48, 60) that do not match those sightings; its Abyssal Depths spot (40, 75) does. He is level 35, swims above the sea floor rather than on it, and can be targeted from above the surface (comments of 2011 and 2022).

No respawn time was ever published:

  • a well-rated 2017 Wowhead comment says an unannounced change in patch 7.3.2 cut it to about four hours, with kills seen every 4 to 7 hours on one realm (72 to 120 hours before that)
  • wow.gg (updated 2026) says 4-6 hours and names no source
  • a commenter in 2022 still looked for four or five days
  • one in 2023 found him nearly always up in Chromie Time with War Mode on

The time on the spot (four hours) is an estimate from those reports, not a published figure.

The reins bind when equipped, so they can be sold to other players (wiki); Wowhead's tooltip data for the item came back without a binding line. The mount swims in any water and only in water (wiki). Sea Legs, the lasting water breathing of Vashj'ir, comes from the zone's opening quest (wow.gg).

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
