How to get it

Rare drop from the Elementium Fragment, the chest left behind when the Madness of Deathwing, the eighth and last encounter of the Dragon Soul raid, is won on Normal or Heroic difficulty; the item is the Reins of the Blazing Drake. The raid is entered in the Caverns of Time in Tanaris, and the seven encounters before it come first: Morchok, Warlord Zon'ozz, Yor'sahj the Unsleeping, Hagara the Stormbinder, Ultraxion, Warmaster Blackhorn and the Spine of Deathwing.

Chance 1.44% once a week, so about 69 tries on average — Wowhead item page (read 2026-10-11), pooled over the four Elementium Fragment objects it lists the mount under: 83 in 12,607 (object 210217), 229 in 29,801 (210218), 844 in 90,093 (210219) and 1,334 in 40,092 (210079), together 2,490 mounts in 172,593 recorded openings = 1.44%. Singly they run from 0.66% to 3.33%; which object is which difficulty and raid size was not established, so the figure for a given mode may be well off the pooled one. The tooltip gives no figure and the wiki says only 'rarely'

From Stormwind (Alliance) about 1 min of travel

  2. Fly the rest of the way
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 1 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Caverns of Time*

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

One kill of the Madness of Deathwing per character each week, so more characters mean more tries. About 69 kills are expected at 1.44%.

It drops on Normal and Heroic, in either raid size, not in Raid Finder:

  • the wiki's page for the chest: 'Normal & Heroic only'
  • Wowhead lists Deathwing as the source on its two Normal and two Heroic modes and not on Raid Finder
  • the long-standing top comment on Wowhead says Normal and Heroic

Each character clears the whole raid: the lockout cannot be shared out between characters the way some raids allow, since a 2025 comment says a kill of the last boss by anyone on a shared lockout counts for its holder too. The best-rated tip of that time: jump off the platform at the tower before Hagara to skip the first scene; releasing puts you at the entrance with the portals open.

Since November 2024 the way to Deathwing is shorter: fewer Twilight Assaulters before Ultraxion, quicker drake waves on Warmaster Blackhorn and a quicker Spine. This comes from a Wowhead comment that found the changes on Heroic and Raid Finder, and is set out in the notes for the Life-Binder's Handmaiden. The time there is that mount's estimate for the eight encounters with their waits between; no source gives one.

The chance is the weak figure, hence medium confidence. The four chest objects differ fivefold, and one of them (210079) holds over half the recorded mounts at 3.33%. The Life-Binder's Handmaiden, a Heroic-only drop from the same chest, is found under three of the same four objects (all but 210218), so the objects do not split cleanly into Normal and Heroic and the counts cannot be read as a chance per difficulty.

The counts stand as recorded and take in the weeks of the Collector's Bounty event of mid-2025, when players report a raised chance for old raid mounts. Comments of 2025 report long dry runs on 25-player Heroic and the drake within two runs after switching to 25-player Normal, and one suspects Normal is the better mode; that is anecdote, not a figure.

The chest can hold this mount and the Life-Binder's Handmaiden together on Heroic.

A second source: the Cache of Timewarped Treasures from the weekly raid quest of Cataclysm Timewalking (Firelands) can also hold it (Wowhead comments of 2026). Wowhead counts 44 mounts in 10,585 openings of that cache (0.42%); the notes for Experiment 12-B say a cache of the same name is given in other Timewalking weeks with other loot, so the count may not be for the Firelands one alone.

The wiki says it can also appear on the Black Market, and Wowhead lists it in the Unclaimed Black Market Container; a mention only.

The mount is one of the criteria of the achievement Awake the Drakes, which gives the Emerald Drake. The item is unique and binds when picked up (wiki and the item's tooltip); it asks for level 32.

The entrance coordinates are from the game's own table of instance entrances, a spot inside the caverns; the cave mouth is at about 64.8, 49.9 (as given for the Twilight Harbinger). Wowhead's figures are from its retail page; its pages for older content jump to its Classic database in a browser.

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
