How to get it

Rare drop from the Elementium Fragment, the chest left behind when the Madness of Deathwing, the eighth and last encounter of the Dragon Soul raid, is won on Heroic difficulty. The raid is entered in the Caverns of Time in Tanaris, and the seven encounters before it come first: Morchok, Warlord Zon'ozz, Yor'sahj the Unsleeping, Hagara the Stormbinder, Ultraxion, Warmaster Blackhorn and the Spine of Deathwing.

Chance 1.37% once a week, so about 73 tries on average — Wowhead item page (read 2026-10-11), pooled over the three Elementium Fragment objects it lists the mount under: 130 in 12,607 (object 210217), 735 in 40,092 (210079) and 1,095 in 90,093 (210219), together 1,960 mounts in 142,792 recorded openings = 1.37%. Singly they run from 1.03% to 1.83%; which object is which raid size was not established. The tooltip gives no figure and the wiki says only 'very rarely'

Getting there

Dragon Soul entrance, Caverns of Time
Tanaris · 61.7, 51.8
/way Tanaris 61.7 51.8
From Stormwind (Alliance) about 1 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Caverns of Time*
  2. Fly the rest of the way
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 1 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Caverns of Time*
  2. Fly the rest of the way

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

Heroic only, in either raid size. One kill of the Madness of Deathwing per character each week, so more characters mean more tries. About 73 kills are expected at 1.37%; players on Wowhead report anything from the first kill to over 700.

Heroic only is from the wiki's pages for the mount, the encounter and the chest, and Wowhead lists Deathwing as the source on its two Heroic modes only. A 2016 comment that tabulated Wowhead's figures of the time had:

  • 0 on both Normal sizes
  • 0.76% on 10-player Heroic
  • 1.95% on 25-player Heroic

That comment is the only source found that splits the chance by raid size, and the three chest objects the mount is now recorded under were not matched to sizes, so the guide does not say which size is better. A 2012 comment, from when the drake was a certain drop, says two dropped on 25-player Heroic and one on 10-player. It stopped being a certain drop when Mists of Pandaria launched (wiki: patch 5.0.5, 25 September 2012).

More than one can be in the chest at once (comments of 2017 and 2025 with screenshots), and it can come together with the Blazing Drake, which the same chest holds on Normal and Heroic. Wowhead's counts stand as recorded and take in the weeks of the Collector's Bounty event of mid-2025, when players report a raised chance for old raid mounts (2025 comments).

Since November 2024 the way to Deathwing is shorter (a 2024 Wowhead comment, which found the changes on Heroic and Raid Finder):

  • 5 Twilight Assaulters instead of 15 before Ultraxion
  • quicker drake waves on Warmaster Blackhorn
  • on the Spine, a Hideous Amalgamation reaches its nine stacks from a single Corrupted Blood

The time there is an estimate for the eight encounters with their waits between; no source gives one.

A second source: the Cache of Timewarped Treasures from the weekly raid quest of Cataclysm Timewalking (Firelands) can also hold it (Wowhead comments of 2023, 2025 and 2026, the last one 'Midnight xpac'). Wowhead counts 46 mounts in 10,585 openings of that cache (0.43%); the notes for Experiment 12-B say a cache of the same name is given in other Timewalking weeks with other loot, so the count may not be for the Firelands one alone.

The wiki lists the Black Market as a place it turns up, and Wowhead counts 3 in 405 Unclaimed Black Market Containers. The item is unique, binds when picked up (wiki; Wowhead's tooltip) and asks for level 32.

The entrance coordinates are from the game's own table of instance entrances, a spot inside the caverns; the cave mouth is at about 64.8, 49.9 (as given for the Twilight Harbinger). Wowhead's figures are from its retail page; its pages for older content jump to its Classic database in a browser.

Confidence in this entry: high. Looked up in 2026.
