Hatches from a Primal Egg. The egg is a chance drop from every dinosaur on the Isle of Giants, north of Kun-Lai Summit: devilsaurs, direhorns and skyscreamers, the big ones most often. After three days it turns into a Cracked Primal Egg, which holds the reins of one of three primal raptors, red, black or green, at random. Only one egg can be carried at a time.
Chance 35.2% per try, so about 3 tries on average — Wowhead (retail item page, read 2026-10-11): 10,455 Reins of the Red Primal Raptor in 29,708 Cracked Primal Eggs opened, 35.2%, about one in three. That is the chance per egg, and each egg takes three days to hatch, so there is no daily or weekly lockout but a three-day wait per character. The egg itself, as this guide's Black Primal Raptor record (539) read it from Wowhead the same day: 44,447 in 1,893,413 recorded loots of the isle's dinosaurs, 2.35% a kill pooled (Primal Devilsaur 5.6%, Primal Direhorn 4.8%, Pterrorwing Skyscreamer 3.4%, Young Primal Devilsaur 1.6%, Primal Direhorn Hatchling 0.85%). The counts are per looting player and go back to 2013

Before you go
- Three days, in real time, for the Primal Egg to hatch into a Cracked Primal Egg. The egg is unique: the next one can only be picked up once this one has hatched · 3 days
In all: spread over 3 days, starting from nothing.
Getting there

- Fly to Vale of Eternal Blossoms
- Ride the rest of the way
- Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Jade Forest*
- Ride the rest of the way
/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight
line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.
Notes and sources
The place given above is the same as for the Black Primal Raptor: one of the points Wowhead's tooltip gives for Primal Devilsaur (NPC 70008), which roam the middle of the isle (49-56, 45-55). The journal's 'Drop: Cracked Primal Egg' names the hatched egg, not a creature.
Getting there: fly north from the coast of Kun-Lai Summit (Zouchin or Binan Village) and over the sea (wow.gg, which also speaks of a portal from the Timeless Isle; not checked). The notes for the Black Primal Raptor have the isle as a no-fly zone from the wiki, with flight masters on its southern beach for later visits.
About three eggs are expected for the red raptor at 35%, some nine days on one character. Of the same 29,708 eggs 9,961 held the black raptor (33.5%), which leaves about 9,300 for the green (31%) if nothing else is in them; that last figure is arithmetic, not read.
The colour cannot be chosen and an egg can hold a raptor that is already owned: one player opened 15 to 20 eggs and had only greens and blacks (a 2020 Wowhead comment), another kept the doubles in the bags in the hope of forcing the missing colour and it made no difference (2014). Each character can carry an egg of its own, so several characters shorten the wait, and the mount is learned for the whole account.
The 45 minutes on the spot is the estimate for one egg given for the Black Primal Raptor: about 43 kills expected at the pooled 2.35%, about 18 on Primal Devilsaurs alone. wow.gg (updated 2026) says 30 to 90 minutes of farming for an egg. The egg also comes from the consolation bags of Oondasta, Nalak and the Throne of Thunder (wiki); the notes for the Black Primal Raptor have Wowhead's counts for those.
Whether the timer runs outside the bags is unclear: wow.gg says it runs while logged out but only in the character's bags and warns against the bank; the wiki does not say.
Wowhead's guide is a player's guide written for Mists of Pandaria (patch 5.4.8, last touched 2019). It covers the egg, the three raptors and the Bone-White Primal Raptor from the same isle, but its figures are older and lower than today's counts (5% for the devilsaur, 2-3% for the direhorn, 35/33/32 for black, red and green). Wowhead's Mists of Pandaria Classic page for the reins has different counts (164 in 531).
The item binds when picked up. The Bone-White Primal Raptor is earned from the bones the same dinosaurs drop, so the two go together.
Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
