How to get it

Hatches from a Primal Egg. The egg is a chance drop from every dinosaur on the Isle of Giants, north of Kun-Lai Summit: devilsaurs, direhorns and skyscreamers, the big ones most often. After three days it turns into a Cracked Primal Egg, which holds the reins of one of three primal raptors, black, green or red, at random. Only one egg can be carried at a time.

Chance 33.5% per try, so about 3 tries on average — Wowhead (retail item page, read 2026-10-11): 9,961 Reins of the Black Primal Raptor in 29,708 Cracked Primal Eggs opened, 33.5%, one in three. That is the chance per egg, and each egg takes three days to hatch, so there is no daily or weekly lockout but a three-day wait per character. The egg itself: 44,447 in 1,893,413 recorded loots of the isle's dinosaurs, 2.35% a kill pooled (Primal Devilsaur 5.6%, Primal Direhorn 4.8%, Pterrorwing Skyscreamer 3.4%, Young Primal Devilsaur 1.6%, Primal Direhorn Hatchling 0.85%; Zandalari Dinomancer 0.01%). The counts are per looting player and go back to 2013

Before you go

  • Three days, in real time, for the Primal Egg to hatch into a Cracked Primal Egg. The egg is unique: the next one can only be picked up once this one has hatched · 3 days

In all: spread over 3 days, starting from nothing.

Getting there

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

The place given above is one of the points Wowhead's tooltip gives for Primal Devilsaur (NPC 70008), which roam the middle of the isle (49-56, 45-55). The journal's 'Drop: Cracked Primal Egg' names the hatched egg, not a creature.

The isle is a no-fly zone (wiki): fly north from Kun-Lai Summit until the Misty Shores dismount the character, then swim or ride a water mount. The flight masters on the southern beach (Beeble's Wreck for the Alliance, Bozzle's Wreck for the Horde) make later visits direct. The wiki knows of no quest for reaching it; the zone is level 35.

Three eggs are expected for the black raptor at one in three, about nine days on one character. The colour cannot be chosen, the same one can come several times running, and an egg can hold a raptor that is already owned (Wowhead comments: five greens from five eggs; three reds in a row; nine eggs without a red). Each character can carry an egg of its own, so several characters shorten the wait, and the mount is learned for the whole account.

The 45 minutes on the spot is an estimate for one egg: about 43 kills expected at the pooled 2.35%, about 18 on Primal Devilsaurs alone. Other reports:

  • wow.gg (updated 2026): 30 to 90 minutes of farming
  • a 2021 Wowhead comment: an egg within two dozen kills as a rule (2 to 41)
  • a 2024 one: two eggs within five minutes
  • others went 1,449 and over 5,000 bones' worth of kills without one

While an egg is in the bags a second one can show in the loot but cannot be taken (comments).

Other sources of the egg, with Wowhead's counts:

  • Oondasta's Shiny Pile of Refuse: 7,867 in 159,282, 4.9%
  • Nalak's Stormtouched Cache: 4,239 in 53,509, 7.9%
  • Treasures of the Thunder King from Throne of Thunder: 3,922 in 68,052, 5.8%
  • Spoils of the Thunder King: 265 in 16,767, 1.6%

An egg inside a Shiny Pile of Refuse can wait there until the one in the bags has hatched (a 2019 comment). Whether the timer runs outside the bags is unclear: wow.gg says it runs while logged out but only in the character's bags and warns against the bank, while a 2013 comment had an egg hatch in the bank.

The Bone-White Primal Raptor is earned on the same isle from the bones the same dinosaurs drop, so the two go together. Wowhead's counts are from its pages for the live game; its Mists of Pandaria Classic copy has different ones. Wowhead lists a guide of its own for these mounts (Isle of Thunder and Isle of Giants Mounts); it was not read, so it is not linked.

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
