How to get it

Hatches from a Primal Egg. The egg is a chance drop from every dinosaur on the Isle of Giants, north of Kun-Lai Summit: devilsaurs, direhorns and skyscreamers, the big ones most often. After three days it turns into a Cracked Primal Egg, which holds the reins of one of three primal raptors, green, black or red, at random. Only one egg can be carried at a time.

Chance 31.2% per try, so about 3 tries on average — Wowhead (retail item page, read 2026-10-11): 9,279 Reins of the Green Primal Raptor in 29,708 Cracked Primal Eggs opened, 31.2%. That is the chance per egg, and each egg takes three days to hatch, so there is no daily or weekly lockout but a three-day wait per character. The egg itself, as this guide's Black Primal Raptor record (539) read it from Wowhead the same day: 44,447 in 1,893,413 recorded loots of the isle's dinosaurs, 2.35% a kill pooled (Primal Devilsaur 5.6%, Primal Direhorn 4.8%, Pterrorwing Skyscreamer 3.4%, Young Primal Devilsaur 1.6%, Primal Direhorn Hatchling 0.85%). The counts are per looting player and go back to 2013

Before you go

  • Three days, in real time, for the Primal Egg to hatch into a Cracked Primal Egg. The egg is unique: the next one can only be picked up once this one has hatched · 3 days

In all: spread over 3 days, starting from nothing.

Notes and sources

About three eggs are expected for the green raptor at 31%, some ten days on one character. The same 29,708 eggs held 10,455 red (35.2%) and 9,961 black (33.5%); the three add up to 29,695, so an egg all but always holds a raptor, and the green is the least common of the three. The counts are from Wowhead's page for the live game.

The colour cannot be chosen and an egg can hold a raptor that is already owned. One player, adding a character each time the green failed to come, had six black and four red in the first ten eggs (a 2023 Wowhead comment on the green reins, as far as it was read); another kept the doubles in the bags hoping that would force the missing colour, and it made no difference (2014). Each character can carry an egg of its own, so several characters shorten the wait, and the mount is learned for the whole account.

The place, the 45 minutes on the spot for one egg and the way there are those given for the Red and the Black Primal Raptor and were not looked up again:

  • the place is one of the points Wowhead's tooltip gives for Primal Devilsaur (NPC 70008), which roam the middle of the isle
  • about 43 kills are expected for an egg at the pooled 2.35%
  • the isle is reached by flying north from the coast of Kun-Lai Summit (Zouchin or Binan Village) over the sea, and is a no-fly zone by the wiki, as read for the Black Primal Raptor

wow.gg (updated 2026) says 30 to 90 minutes of farming for an egg, that the big devilsaurs and direhorns drop it most often, and that the timer runs while logged out but only in the character's bags, not in the bank. The wiki adds that the humanoid Zandalari Dinomancers do not drop the egg, and that it also turns up in the consolation bags of the Isle of Thunder's world bosses and the Throne of Thunder (Treasures and Spoils of the Thunder King, Stormtouched Cache, Shiny Pile of Refuse). The journal's 'Drop: Cracked Primal Egg' names the hatched egg, not a creature.

Wowhead's guide is linked on the strength of the notes for the Red and the Black Primal Raptor, which describe it as a player's guide from Mists of Pandaria (last touched 2019) that covers the egg and the three raptors with older and lower figures; it was not read again. The item binds when picked up.

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
