Build a Stables in the garrison, lasso a Young Icehoof in the north of Frostfire Ridge for the quest Capturing a Clefthoof, then do 12 daily Clefthoof Training quests, each a kill made from the back of the icehoof-in-training; the last, Clefthoof Training: The Garn, rewards the mount. The quests come from Keegan Firebeard (Alliance) or Tormak the Scarred (Horde) at the Stables.
Time there about 10 min a visit
Before you go
- Garrison founded, raised to tier 2, Stables built on a large plot (150 gold and 150 Garrison Resources, 1-hour build timer) · about 2.5 h
- Capturing a Clefthoof: use the Clefthoof Lasso on a Young Icehoof at Coldsnap Bluffs in the north of Frostfire Ridge (about 55, 20) and keep up with it until it is tamed. An Alliance character comes in by the road from south-western Gorgrond and through the gap in the rockslide at 78.9, 56.0 · about 0.5 h
- 12 daily Clefthoof Training quests after the capture: Great-Tusk in Shadowmoon Valley, Rakkiri in Frostfire Ridge, Riplash in Gorgrond, Gezz'ran in Talador, Bulbapore in the Spires of Arak, then seven targets in Nagrand (Cruel Ogres, Darkwing Roc, Moth of Wrath, Thundercall, Ironbore, Orc Hunters) ending with the garn Maimclaw · about 2 h over 13 days
In all: about 5 h of play, spread over 13 days, 150 gold, starting from nothing.
Getting there
/way Shadowmoon Valley 29.6 16 - Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Ashran*
- Fly the rest of the way
/way Frostfire Ridge 48.7 64.9 - Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Ashran*
- Fly the rest of the way
/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight
line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.
Notes and sources
About 10 minutes a day for 13 days: the capture on the first day (the Horde quest giver says the clefthoof 'will need rest before it is ready for training', wiki), then one training quest a day. With the talbuk's it is the longest of the six Stables chains (Wowhead's guide, updated 2018, read 2026):
- 12 quests for the talbuk and the clefthoof
- 10 for the boar
- 9 for the riverbeast
- 7 for the elekk and the wolf
The place given above is the garrison's own spot on the zone map, as for the guide's other garrison mounts, not the Stables' plot, which the player chooses. The clefthoof is one of the first two animals the Stables offer (the Trained Meadowstomper's notes, from Icy Veins: talbuk and clefthoof on the first two days, in the opposite order for the Horde), so nothing has to be captured before it. The capture quest is 36916 for the Alliance and 36912 for the Horde.
The wiki gives the chain as Capturing a Clefthoof, then the Clefthoof Training quests below, and has the last one reward the Trained Icehoof; two 2014 comments under Wowhead's guide put Rakkiri before Great-Tusk. The quests in the wiki's order, with targets and spots from the guide:
- Great-Tusk: 62.8, 39.0 in Shadowmoon Valley
- Rakkiri: 72.8, 70.0 in Frostfire Ridge
- Riplash: 50.2, 38.0 in Gorgrond
- Gezz'ran: 31.6, 54.6 in Talador
- Bulbapore: 66.6, 75.6 in Spires of Arak
- Cruel Ogres: the Gorian Beast-Lasher, 79.2, 71.6 in Nagrand
- Darkwing Roc: 68.6, 20.6 in Nagrand
- Moth of Wrath: 43.0, 69.1 in Nagrand
- Thundercall: 90.6, 23.6 in Nagrand
- Ironbore: 53.2, 77.6 in Nagrand
- Orc Hunters: Karak the Great Hunter, 69, 34.3 in Nagrand
- The Garn: Maimclaw, 63, 80 in Nagrand
Each quest is a kill made riding the mount-in-training, called with the whistle the quest provides; the mount-in-training takes the damage (a 2014 comment on the guide). All six animals follow the same order and start at different points, so the chains can run side by side from one Stables, and the Trained Silverpelt shares all twelve targets. The mount stays if the Stables are later replaced (guide).
When no quest appears: comments of 2015 and 2016 report days without one, and a reply from Blizzard's support quoted in a 2016 comment says to stand in the Stables yard, leave the game entirely and come back; the same comment got its quests back by putting the Black Claw of Sethe out of the bags. A 2015 reply claims more than one training quest a day by logging out and in; not confirmed, and the days here assume one a day. A 2015 comment had the rope break 'at the tree area' during the capture and got no answer.
Levels: the wiki shows the capture as a level 10-40 quest and The Garn as level 40; the mount item asks for level 17 (wiki).
Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
