How to get it

Comes out of a Rattling Iron Cage, which the four champions of Hellfire Citadel in Tanaan Jungle can drop: Terrorfist, Deathtalon, Vengeance and Doomroller. Each can be looted once a day per character. A cage always holds one of three mounts, this one about a third of the time.

Chance 11.5% once a day, so about 9 tries on average — Worked out, not read as such. Wowhead's page for the Rattling Iron Cage (read 2026-10-11) records the cage in 9,412 of 105,234 loots of the four champions, 8.9% a kill (Deathtalon 1,997 in 22,532, Terrorfist 2,209 in 26,225, Vengeance 2,428 in 28,228, Doomroller 2,778 in 28,249), and this mount in 3,649 of 10,874 opened cages (33.6%). That is 3.0% a kill; 11.5% is the chance for one day's kills of all four (1 minus the product of the four misses). The counts are pooled over all years. wow.gg cites about 10% for the cage

Getting there

Tanaan Jungle champions (4 spots; Doomroller is the one in the middle, at the gate of Hellfire Citadel)
Tanaan Jungle · 46.8, 52.6
/way Tanaan Jungle 46.8 52.6
From Stormwind (Alliance) about 1.9 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Ashran*
  2. Fly the rest of the way
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 2 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Ashran*
  2. Fly the rest of the way

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

About 33 kills are expected, some 9 days if all four champions are killed every day. The daily limit is per character and per champion (wow.gg; a 2021 Wowhead comment warns against assuming one loot a day in all), so more characters mean more tries a day.

Where they stand:

  • Doomroller: 46.8, 52.6, at the entrance of Hellfire Citadel (wiki)
  • Terrorfist: 14.4, 61.2, near Rangari Refuge
  • Vengeance: 32, 74, at the Temple of Sha'naar
  • Deathtalon: about 23.2, 39.8, in the Ruins of Kra'nak

The last three are as given for the Warsong Direfang, from the champions' own pages.

The slow part is finding them alive. A player who timed 59 visits to a freshly created copy of the zone saw the champions appear 60 to 115 minutes after it was created (2024 Wowhead comment); other comments say 1-2 hours between spawns, and wow.gg says 1-3. A copy of the zone that stands empty for about 15 minutes is closed and starts over (comments of 2023 and 2024). A spawn is marked on the world map and announced with a zone-wide yell (wiki, for Doomroller).

The 90 minutes on site are an estimate for waiting out all four in a fresh copy; when they happen to be up, the round is 10-15 minutes (wow.gg).

The journal names the four creatures and leaves out the cage they drop; Wowhead's tooltip for the mount carries no drop chance for the same reason. The mount has a 33% chance to be in a cage by the wiki as well, which says the cages 'uncommonly drop' from the four. The other two mounts a cage can hold are the Warsong Direfang (3,680 of the 10,874 cages) and the Tundra Icehoof (3,545).

A cage can hold a mount already owned (wow.gg; Wowhead comments complain of duplicates as late as 2026). Players' own tallies in the comments run from 3 cages in 87 kills to 10 in 216.

What a character must have done to see the champions was not established:

  • wow.gg says access to Draenor is enough, with no garrison needed and level 40 to be able to attack them
  • a 2021 Wowhead comment (rated -6) suspected a link to that character's own progress in Tanaan
  • a 2024 question whether the shipyard has to be built went unanswered

Wowhead's drop list for the cage also shows a handful from ordinary Tanaan creatures (6 to 33 in several hundred thousand loots each), too few to count.

The item asks for level 17 and binds when picked up (wiki). The guide linked is written for the Tundra Icehoof; the cage, the champions and the daily round are the same.

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
