Reward of the achievement Awake the Drakes: have nine older drake mounts in the collection, the Azure, Black, Blue, Bronze, Blazing, Onyxian, Red, Twilight and Purple Netherwing Drakes. Progress is account-wide. The mount journal calls the achievement Drake Collector.
Before you go
- Bronze Drake: certain from the Infinite Corruptor in the Heroic Culling of Stratholme, who has to be reached and killed within 25 minutes of the first wave of Scourge; after that he is gone · about 0.5 h
- Black Drake and Twilight Drake: Sartharion in the Obsidian Sanctum, pulled and killed with Tenebron, Shadron and Vesperon all still alive. Done that way the 10-player raid gives the Black Drake and the 25-player raid the Twilight Drake, each for certain · about 0.5 h
- The Netherwing introduction: Mordenai's chain in the Netherwing Fields of Shadowmoon Valley in Outland, which lifts the standing from Hated to Neutral and opens the dailies on Netherwing Ledge · about 1.5 h
- Exalted with Netherwing: 42,000 reputation from Neutral, from the quests and dailies on Netherwing Ledge and from Netherwing Eggs. At Exalted the Purple Netherwing Drake can be chosen as the reward of the quest that hands out one drake, or bought from Drake Dealer Hurlunk on Netherwing Ledge for 200 gold · about 9 h over 2 weeks
- Exalted with The Wyrmrest Accord: 42,000 reputation from Neutral, by the Dragonblight and Coldarra quests and then the faction's tabard worn in Northrend dungeons. Cielstrasza at the top of Wyrmrest Temple in Dragonblight sells the Red Drake at Exalted · about 7 h over 2 days
- 1,600 gold for the Red Drake (2,000 before the discount Exalted brings)
- Azure Drake and Blue Drake: both are rare finds in Alexstrasza's Gift, the chest Malygos leaves in the Eye of Eternity, in the 10-player and the 25-player raid alike. About 51 chests are expected before both have turned up · about 4.25 h over 26 weeks
- Onyxian Drake: rare drop from Onyxia in Onyxia's Lair, Dustwallow Marsh; about 69 kills expected · about 5.75 h over 69 weeks
- Blazing Drake: rare find in the Elementium Fragment, the chest left when the Madness of Deathwing encounter at the end of Dragon Soul is won on Normal or Heroic difficulty; about 69 chests expected · about 35 h over 69 weeks
In all: about 63.5 h of play, spread over 69 weeks, 1,600 gold, starting from nothing.
Getting there
There is nowhere to travel for this one.
Notes and sources
There is no place to go: the achievement is earned the moment the ninth drake is learned. Wowhead's tooltip for the achievement (9713) is headed Awake the Drakes, lists the nine drakes and gives Reins of the Emerald Drake as the reward; the wiki says the journal's 'Drake Collector' is a mistake in the journal. How the reins are handed over (bags or mail) was not established.
Five of the nine are certain once their conditions are met (Bronze, Black, Twilight, and the two bought at Exalted); the time is in the four that are left to chance. They run side by side, so the whole is as long as its slowest part: by the recorded chances the Onyxian and the Blazing Drake each take about 69 weekly tries on one character, and both go faster with more characters, since every character has its own lockout.
Five of the nine have their own entries in this guide with the entrance and the detail: the Azure Drake, the Blue Drake, the Red Drake, the Black Drake and the Onyxian Drake. The Bronze, Twilight, Blazing and Purple Netherwing Drakes had none when this was written, and what is said of them here comes from the wiki and Wowhead.
Blazing Drake: a 2011 Wowhead comment (+713) has it dropping on Normal and Heroic, and Wowhead's dropped-by list names the four Normal and Heroic modes and not the Raid Finder. Wowhead also has the reins in the Cache of Timewarped Treasures, the reward of a Timewalking raid's weekly quest (44 in 10,585 openings, 0.42%; players report it from the Firelands quest in 2026), and the wiki and Wowhead both list them as a Black Market item; neither is the route described.
Not checked: whether the Heroic Culling of Stratholme still asks for anything to enter, and whether the Obsidian Sanctum's two sizes lock separately.
No step-by-step guide to this achievement was found (a search turned up only sites that sell it, and wow.gg has no page for it); the wiki's page for the achievement lists the nine drakes with their sources and is linked as the checklist. The reins ask for level 27 (wiki).
Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
