How to get it

Looted every time from the Voidtalon Egg, which lies in a small scenario reached through an Edge of Reality, a rare purple portal that appears for about 15 minutes at one of 28 known points in six zones of Draenor (not Tanaan Jungle). Clicking the portal brings up a scenario queue; inside there is no fight, only the egg to open. Only the one player who clicks a portal gets the mount from it, so the whole task is finding a portal before anyone else does; the six points in the south of Shadowmoon Valley are the ones to watch.

Guides Wowhead: Call of the Void: A Voidtalon Guide · Warcraft Secrets: Voidtalon of the Dark Star – Rare Spawn Mount Guide

Before you go

  • An Edge of Reality being up, and being the first to click it. Portals only begin to appear 48 hours after a server reset (so from about Thursday morning to the next reset on US realms, Friday to Wednesday on EU ones); one stays about 15 minutes; in the same zone the next comes at least 2 hours after one that vanished unclicked and at least 8 hours after one that was claimed, with no known upper limit. Shadowmoon Valley's points: 41.9, 75.7 - 43.6, 71.4 - 46.6, 70.2 - 48.8, 70.2 - 50.3, 71.5 - 51.7, 74.9 · about 15 h over 2 weeks

In all: about 15 h of play, spread over 2 weeks, starting from nothing.

Getting there

Edge of Reality, the six spawn points in the south of Shadowmoon Valley
Shadowmoon Valley · 46.6, 70.2
/way Shadowmoon Valley 46.6 70.2
From Stormwind (Alliance) about 2.6 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Ashran*
  2. Fly the rest of the way
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 2.9 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Ashran*
  2. Fly the rest of the way

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

The wait is the whole cost and cannot be planned; the hours counted in the requirements are checking and waiting, and the figure is rough. The place given above is the third of the six Shadowmoon Valley points, in the middle of the row.

Why Shadowmoon Valley: every other Draenor zone unloads after 15 minutes with no player in it, which starts its 48 hours again, so on quiet realms the other zones seldom get a portal. Shadowmoon Valley does not unload, and its six points lie close together (one round takes from 30 seconds to 2 minutes). Unannounced server restarts push the 48 hours back too.

The method of Wowhead's guide (by the Secret Finding Discord, updated 2026) is to keep characters there on several realm groups that do not share zones (roleplaying realms are not merged with others) and to check them in turn. War Mode on and off, and Chromie Time, are separate copies of the zone, each with its own portals. No two portals are up in the same zone of a realm at once, but several zones can each have one.

The portal cannot be targeted and shows on no rare-scanning addon; the guide gives a mouse-over macro that sounds an alarm, and says a low particle density setting makes the portal hard to see.

By the guide and Wowhead's item page, the mount was in the Voidtalon Egg in all 323 recorded loots. A character that has learned the mount no longer sees the portals, but the account's other characters do. The egg asks for level 10; a lower character, one that gets no scenario prompt or one that cannot get in has the mount mailed within an hour or two (the wiki: by a letter from Archmage Khadgar). Class trial characters can loot it.

A 2025 comment tells of clicking a portal while in a raid group, getting no prompt and no mail, and the guide warns that a character of level 48 or more that has been party-synced into Chromie Time can lose the mount the same way.

The other 22 points, by the guide:

  • Frostfire Ridge: 51.1, 19.9; 52.4, 18.2; 53.8, 17.3; 48.0, 27.4
  • Gorgrond: 51.6, 38.6; 54.0, 45.8; 56.0, 40.7; 43.2, 34.2
  • Talador: 39.9, 55.6; 46.3, 52.6; 47.2, 48.8; 52.1, 41.1; 52.3, 25.9; 52.7, 34.4; 51.0, 32.4
  • Spires of Arak: 36.4, 18.3; 46.8, 20.2; 50.4, 6.3; 60.9, 11.2
  • Nagrand: 40.5, 47.6; 44.0, 30.8; 57.3, 26.6

Disagreements: the wiki's page for the mount says most zones have three points, Shadowmoon Valley five and Talador two, which is the count of 2015; its page for the portal (edited 2026) lists the same 28 as the guide. Warcraft Secrets recommends Frostfire Ridge as well as Shadowmoon Valley; Wowhead's guide says Shadowmoon Valley only.

The item binds when picked up and asks for level 17 on the wiki; a 2026 comment says a level 10 character learned it.

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
