How to get it

Rare drop (Deathcharger's Reins) from Lord Aurius Rivendare, the last boss of the Service Entrance half of Stratholme, entered by the Eastwall Gate on the east side of the city in the Eastern Plaguelands. Inside, the three ziggurats are shut down first (Baroness Anastari, Nerub'enkan and Maleki the Pallid, and the five Thuzadin Acolytes in each), which opens Slaughter Square; there the abominations, Ramstein the Gorger and the Black Guard Sentries come before Rivendare in the Slaughter House.

Chance 0.86% per try, so about 116 tries on average — Wowhead (read 2026-10-11): 1,671 reins in 193,530 recorded Normal loots of Lord Aurius Rivendare. Timewalking is counted apart at 166 in 18,594 (0.89%), and the two pooled are 1,837 in 212,124 (0.87%). Counts are per looting player and reach back years. The wiki gives 1% since patch 3.0.2

From Stormwind (Alliance) about 2.6 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Silvermoon*
  2. Fly the rest of the way
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 2.3 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Orgrimmar to Undercity*

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

The entrance matters: a 2025 Wowhead comment (the best-rated recent one) says the run has to start from the Service Entrance at 43.32, 19.67, and that a character who finds itself in Stratholme - Main Gate after zoning in should leave, reset and enter again. The wiki puts the Eastwall Gate at 43, 18. The game's own entrance data shows both halves of Stratholme at the Main Gate (27.3, 11.6), so the place given above follows the players and the wiki rather than the game's data.

There is no lockout: the dungeon is reset after each run, up to the game's limit of ten instances an hour (Wowhead comment of 2015). At 0.86% that is about 116 kills on average, and 80 kills give about an even chance. Ten minutes a run is an estimate; players' own times in the comments are old (12 to 15 minutes at level 70 to 80).

The boss was Baron Rivendare until patch 4.0.3a put his son Aurius in his place (wiki); the journal's 'Location: Stratholme' does not say which half. Wowhead also records the reins from the Timewalking version of the dungeon, when Classic Timewalking is on. The item binds when picked up (Wowhead tooltip). A single boss, so no guide is linked.

Confidence in this entry: high. Looked up in 2026.
