Rare drop from Gul'dan, the last boss of The Nighthold in Suramar, on Normal, Heroic or Mythic difficulty; Raid Finder does not give it. The Living Infernal Core that teaches the mount is looted from the Gift of the Nightborne, the chest that appears when he dies.
Chance 0.15% once a week, so about 667 tries on average — Wowhead: 245 cores in 165,749 recorded loots of the Gift of the Nightborne (0.15%; item page read 2026-10-10, the tooltip gives no figure). The count is not split by difficulty, spans all years and is per looting player, so loots from the years when a whole raid shared one chest weigh it down. Wowhead also lists 168 in 38,537 (0.44%) under The Demon Within, Gul'dan's Mythic-only last phase. wow.gg (updated August 2026) says about 1% and names no source

Getting there
/way Suramar 44.2 59.5 - Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Azsuna*
- Fly the rest of the way
- Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Azsuna*
- Fly the rest of the way
/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight
line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.
Notes and sources
Each of the three difficulties has its own weekly lockout per character, so there are three tries a week (wow.gg; a 2025 Wowhead comment checked that each one gives loot). The wiki says Normal or higher, and records a hotfix of 26 October 2017 that stopped the core dropping in Raid Finder by mistake.
About 680 kills are expected at Wowhead's 0.15%, 100 at the 1% the guides cite. Players who post their counts on Wowhead range from under 10 kills to more than 1,400. During the Collector's Bounty event of July 2025 many players reported for two weeks that this mount's chance had not been raised, and drops again after the reset of 15 July; whatever happened is inside Wowhead's count.
A shortcut: the quest The Nighthold: Talisman of the Shal'dorei opens a teleporter from the entrance to Grand Magistrix Elisande, the boss before Gul'dan (wiki). It takes 4 Echoes of Time from Elisande and comes from First Arcanist Thalyssra, one quest per difficulty, a higher one opening the lower ones. A 2024 Wowhead comment says that since patch 11.0.5 the skip no longer has to be earned on every character; not confirmed elsewhere.
The 15 minutes on site are wow.gg's 10-15 minutes for all ten bosses, without the skip. The entrance is from the game's own instance-entrance table; wow.gg's waypoint is 45.8, 64.5. The lowest level that may enter was not established; the item asks for level 10 (wiki).
On Mythic Gul'dan also drops the Fiendish Hellfire Core for the Hellfire Infernal, a different mount. Hemet Nesingwary XVII sold this one for 100,000 Bronze during Legion Remix, which has ended (wiki, wow.gg); Wowhead still lists him.
Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
