How to get it

Drops, as Midnight's Eternal Reins, from Attumen the Huntsman in the stables of Return to Karazhan on Mythic difficulty. The Opera Hall has to be finished first; after it the way to the stables is back at the entrance, through the Grand Ballroom and down the stairs.

Chance 1.32% once a week, so about 76 tries on average — Wowhead: 1,038 in 78,508 loots of Attumen the Huntsman on Mythic (item page read 2026-10-11). Over all difficulties the page shows 1,038 in 110,237 (0.94%, the figure commenters quote as 0.9%): every recorded drop is a Mythic one, so the other 31,729 loots are Heroic and keystone runs, where it does not drop. The counts are per looting player and go back to Legion

Nothing to unlock first: go there and take your chance.

Getting there

Return to Karazhan entrance (side door of the tower)
Deadwind Pass · 46.4, 70.7
/way Deadwind Pass 46.4 70.7
From Stormwind (Alliance) about 1.3 min of travel
  1. Fly there
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 2.3 min of travel
  1. Take the zeppelin from Orgrimmar to Stranglethorn Vale*
  2. Fly the rest of the way

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

The journal names the boss and the dungeon but not the difficulty: the wiki says Mythic, and Wowhead's loot data has all 1,038 recorded drops on Mythic. The dungeon also has a Heroic and a keystone version since patch 7.2, split into a lower and an upper wing (wiki).

Mythic is set from the character portrait before entering. A message in orange appears in chat once the first door inside is opened, and that is the sign that it is Mythic (a 2022 Wowhead comment, which says the message is tied to another mount; the Smoldering Ember Wyrm, the dungeon's other mount, has a timer that starts at that door).

The lockout is a week (wiki), per character: commenters run it on many characters each week. The time on site is wow.gg's 5-10 minutes for a run. The entrance is from the game's own instance-entrance table, as for the Smoldering Ember Wyrm. A portal to Karazhan stands in the Chamber of the Guardian under Legion Dalaran (2025 comment, +103).

Route, from Wowhead comments: the Opera Hall first (enter, go right), then back to the entrance, left, then right and right again through the Grand Ballroom door, jump down and take the stairs down to the stables (2018 comment, +361; a 2025 reply has the same: 'You have to do Opera first, but you can skip Moroes').

wow.gg (updated 2026) gives another way: kill Moroes and take the Rusty Keys from his table to open the stable door by the entrance. The wiki says only that a rusty set of keys is needed to advance in the dungeon. Which of the two a player needs today was not established; both end at the same boss.

Midnight, the horse, is part of the Attumen fight; the reins are in Attumen's loot. The item binds when picked up and is unique. The mount does not fly (comments of 2025). Reports of the number of kills it took run from 1 to 450.

Things commenters ran into, and whether either still happens was not established: the Westfall Story opera could lock up if the rogue or the murloc was killed outright, so bring each to half health first, then kill Toe Knee, then the murloc (2022). In 2025 a boss killed in one blow by certain abilities (a frost mage's Flurry was named) left no loot at all, and the advice was to open with a plain weapon swing.

Two other ways the mount was offered are over: Hemet Nesingwary XVII sold it for 100,000 Bronze during Legion Remix (wiki; Wowhead's sold-by list still shows him), and the Collector's Bounty event of July 2025 raised the chance (a 2025 reply put it at 5.9% for the event). Added in patch 7.1.0.

Confidence in this entry: high. Looked up in 2026.
