How to get it

Reward of Fate of the Nightborne, the last quest of the Suramar story. After the Insurrection campaign and with Gul'dan killed in The Nighthold, Chief Telemancer Oculeth in Shal'Aran offers it and opens a portal to the Nightwell, where First Arcanist Thalyssra hands the mount over. The item can only be learned by a character that is Exalted with The Nightfallen. A Nightborne character can instead take it from Thalyssra in Shal'Aran at no cost.

Before you go

  • The Suramar story up to Insurrection, from level 45: Khadgar's Discovery in Dalaran, the chapters of Nightfallen But Not Forgotten, then the main line of Good Suramaritan (An Ancient Gift, The Waning Crescent, Blood and Wine, Statecraft, A Growing Crisis, A Change of Seasons), which ends with Arcan'dor, Gift of the Ancient Magi and Arluin's Request · about 4.5 h
  • Insurrection, nine chapters run from Shal'Aran: Lockdown, Missing Persons, Waxing Crescent, An Elven Problem, Crafting War, March on Suramar, Elisande's Retort, As Strong As Our Will and Breaking the Nighthold · about 2.5 h
  • Gul'dan killed in The Nighthold raid, on any difficulty, with the quest The Nighthold: Lord of the Shadow Council in the log. It is handed in to Khadgar on the spot, inside the raid; he gives The Nighthold: The Eye of Aman'Thul, which has to be finished before Oculeth offers the last quest. The raid entrance is in Suramar City at 44.2, 59.5 · about 0.5 h
  • Exalted with The Nightfallen, without which the mount item cannot be used. The story's quests pay most of it; the rest comes from Suramar world quests (50-250 each), Withered Army Training (up to 425 every three days) and the three who are fed Ancient Mana daily in Shal'Aran · about 2 h over 3 days

In all: about 9.5 h of play, spread over 3 days, starting from nothing.

  2. Fly the rest of the way
From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 1.7 min of travel
  1. Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Azsuna*

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

There is a far shorter way for an account that has the Nightborne allied race. Wowhead's sold-by list (as read in 2026) has First Arcanist Thalyssra in Shal'Aran selling the item (listed at 500 gold), and the wiki says a Nightborne can buy it from her 'for free'. Wowhead comments from 2018 to 2024 (patch 11.0.5) describe it step by step:

  • make a Nightborne character; a class trial one will do
  • go to Shal'Aran and choose 'I wish to trade' with Thalyssra
  • take the mount at no cost, since a Nightborne counts as Exalted and as having finished the story
  • the mount is then in the whole account's collection

A 2021 comment adds that the portal to Shal'Aran and the item ask for level 45, which a trial character has. The race is Horde and is opened by a level 40 character through the embassy quests in Orgrimmar, with no achievement asked since patch 10.1.5 (wiki). This way has not been confirmed since Midnight; one 2025 comment found the mount gone from Thalyssra's list, on characters that seem not to have been Nightborne.

The requirements above describe the quest instead, which is what the journal names and what any character can do. The whole chain is 6-8 hours of play with no time gates by wow.gg (updated 2026); in Legion it was nine weekly chapters behind reputation. Insurrection the achievement is account-wide since patch 11.0.0 (wiki), but the quests are done by the character that wants the last one.

Exalted: the item reads 'Requires The Nightfallen - Exalted' (Wowhead, wiki), and commenters who finished the quest below Exalted could not learn it until they got there. Whether the quest itself asks for Exalted is not clear: wow.gg says so, the wiki's quest page lists no reputation.

Who gives the last quest: the wiki, wow.gg and the top Wowhead comment (2016, +820) say Oculeth in Shal'Aran; another comment (2017) says Khadgar gives it where Gul'dan dies, which fits The Eye of Aman'Thul instead. All agree that Khadgar must be spoken to before leaving the raid.

Good Suramaritan: wow.gg asks for the achievement, which also counts five side stories:

  • Breaking the Lightbreaker
  • Moon Guard Stronghold
  • Jandvik's Jarl
  • Eminent Grow-main
  • Tidying Tel'anor

Wowhead's Suramar guide gives Insurrection's prerequisite as A Change of Seasons ending with Arluin's Request, which is the main line listed above. Whether the side stories are needed was not established.

Shal'Aran is a cave; the coordinates are Wowhead's tooltip position for Thalyssra on Suramar's map (36.4-37.0, 46.2-46.8). Wowhead's Comprehensive Suramar Guide (updated 2025) walks through every chapter but does not name the mount; its Insurrection walkthrough (2017) does, and still describes the old gates.

The item binds when picked up; summoned in Suramar City the mount also applies Masquerade (wiki). Added in patch 7.1.0, the quest in 7.1.5 (wiki).

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
