Dropped as Shadowy Reins of the Accursed Wrathsteed by Lord Hel'nurath, a rare elite dreadlord at the Dark Stockades on the Broken Shore, for a warlock who has itself finished the class mount quest The Wrathsteed of Xoroth; for that warlock the drop is certain. He appears at irregular times and can be looted once a day, so he should not be killed on the day before the quest is done.

Guides Wowhead: Obtaining Legion Class Mounts · Blizzard Support: Killed Lord Hel'Nurath, Did Not Get Shadowy Reins of the Accursed Wrathsteed · Warcraft Tavern: Warlock Class Mount Guide (written for Legion Remix)
Before you go
- The Netherlord's Chaotic Wrathsteed first, earned on this very warlock: the warlock class hall campaign, Breaching the Tomb once per account, then the seven quests that Elithys Firestorm starts at Deliverance Point on the Broken Shore, ending with The Wrathsteed of Xoroth. Having the mount from another warlock of the account is not enough · about 16.5 h over 4 days
- Lord Hel'nurath being up. He comes at no fixed hour: players have waited from a few minutes to several days. Once he appears he stays about 30 minutes and is back within a minute or two of each kill during that time, so a fresh body on the ground means wait, not leave. He can be up without his skull on the map, and War Mode on and off are separate copies of the zone, so both are worth a look · about 6 h over 2 days
In all: about 22.5 h of play, spread over 4 days, starting from nothing.
Getting there
/way Broken Shore 45.2 51.8 - Take the portal from Wizard's Sanctum to Azsuna*
- Fly the rest of the way
- Take the portal from Pathfinder's Den to Azsuna*
- Fly the rest of the way
/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight
line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.
Notes and sources
Warlocks only; the item asks for level 45 and Apprentice Riding and binds when picked up (wiki). What the first mount, the Netherlord's Chaotic Wrathsteed, takes is on its own page; the second colour is the Netherlord's Brimstone Wrathsteed.
The rule is Blizzard's own (support article 186066, updated about eight months before these notes were checked): the quest has to be done on the warlock that kills him, which can be tested with /dump IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(46243), and once that warlock loots the reins the colour is there for every warlock of the account. If the quest is done and nothing drops, the article says to dismiss the mount, kill him again, and failing that report a bug.
The drop is counted as certain, on the word of:
- the wiki: 'a guaranteed drop' after the Chaotic Wrathsteed
- Warcraft Tavern: '100% drop chance once you have completed the quest chain'
- comments from 2017 (five warlocks; the four with the class mount all got it) to 2026
The comments that deny it (2017, 2022, 2026) do not say the quest was done on that character, and one of them took the hint in a reply. Wowhead's own figures are no chance at all: its page for him counts 2,422 reins in 118,561 loots (2.0%), which is every player of every class who looted him, and the item's page shows 8 in 14. So no drop chance is set.
The daily lock: he gives loot once a day to a character (comments of 2017, 2020, 2024 and 2026). Among them is a warlock who helped kill him while still on the quest chain, finished it the same day and then got nothing from five kills. A 2026 comment killed him around noon before the quest was done and got nothing, then again around 7 in the morning after it and got the reins, which fits a lock that ends with the daily reset.
Where: Wowhead's tooltip for him (npc 119629, a level 47 rare elite) has six points between 44.4 and 46.8, 50.0 and 53.6; 45.2, 51.8 is one of them and Warcraft Tavern's. The commenters' waypoint is 45.0, 51.3, and the wiki names the Dark Stockades.
When, neither confirmed: a 2023 comment from a player who watched the zone for days says the other Broken Shore rares come several times a day in waves and he alone seems to come about once in 24 hours, at a time that changes daily; a 2025 one says he can spawn several times a day. Rares that outlast their marked time lose the skull on the map but stay (the same 2023 comment; comments of 2017 and 2021 looted the reins from him without the skull).
Commenters of 2022, 2023 (+44), 2024, 2025 and 2026 found him by switching War Mode, which a 2023 reply calls coincidence. Others found him by joining premade groups listed for him, which moves the character to a realm where he is up (2017, 2026).
Players of other classes kill him too, which can cost a slow warlock the tag (a 2025 comment), while a warlock parked there asleep got the reins by mail after others pulled him (2025). He also spawned in Legion Remix (comments of 2025 and 2026), which the notes for the Shadowblade's Murderous Omen have ending in January 2026.
Guides: Wowhead's guide (updated 2025) gives the requirements for the class mounts and one line on this one, a drop, naming npc 112936 where the loot data and every comment have npc 119629. Warcraft Tavern's guide was written for Legion Remix but describes the same rare.
Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
