How to get it

From Island Expeditions, in two ways at once. It is a rare reward at the end of an expedition on which pirates were among the island's enemies (the wiki names Crestfall and the Rotting Mire; players also report it after pirate invaders on other islands), and it can be inside Rotting Mire Salvage or Crestfall Salvage, crates that the salvage captain beside the Expedition Map sells for 175 Seafarer's Dubloons each in the weeks their island is one of the three on offer. The dubloons come from the expeditions themselves.

Chance 11.01% per try, so about 9 tries on average — Per crate of Rotting Mire Salvage. Wowhead (item page read 2026-10-11): 113 mounts in 1,026 opened Rotting Mire Salvage; Crestfall Salvage has 113 in 2,477 (4.56%). They are the only two containers Wowhead has the mount in, and the counts are per opening player since patch 8.3. The chance of the end-of-expedition reward was never published

Guide Wowhead: Island Expeditions and Salvage Crate Rewards - Mounts, Pets, Toys, Transmog

Before you go

  • 175 Seafarer's Dubloons for each crate: some 13 to 40 expeditions. A crate is only on sale in a week when its island is one of the three, so the dubloons may have to wait for the Rotting Mire or Crestfall · about 2.5 h

In all: about 2.5 h of play, starting from nothing.

From Orgrimmar (Horde) about 1.2 min of travel

/way is for the TomTom addon. Travel times are estimates: flying at 55 yards a second in a straight line and 30 seconds for a portal. A star marks a portal that needs a quest or other unlock done first.

Notes and sources

About 9 crates of Rotting Mire Salvage are expected at Wowhead's figure (some 1,600 dubloons), or about 22 of Crestfall Salvage. The hours given in the requirements are for one crate, and the dubloon rate is the weak figure. The time on the spot is buying and opening a crate; an expedition itself is the 5.5 minutes counted above.

The wiki's pages for the two crates list Squawks among the contents, at 175 Seafarer's Dubloons from Captain Nightrunner in Boralus and Captain Kitt in Dazar'alor. The captains and their coordinates, the unlock and the dubloon arithmetic are taken from this guide's Twilight Avenger and Island Thunderscale and were not looked up again. From the same notes:

  • an island's crate is on sale only when that island is one of the week's three, out of eleven in rotation (a 2022 comment on this mount's page, from a player who found neither crate at Captain Kitt, was answered the same way)
  • dubloons keep, and have moved between a warband's characters since patch 11.0
  • the island cannot be chosen; the queue picks one of the week's three
  • a hotfix of 17 June 2026 put expedition queueing right again in Midnight

Players on Wowhead's page:

  • the 5th Rotting Mire crate, and '4-6' of them (both 2024; the second from three expeditions a week on four characters)
  • the first Crestfall crate (2021)
  • 11 Rotting Mire and then 11 Crestfall crates (2026, the newest comment, so the crates are still sold in Midnight)

The wiki's page for the mount (last edited 2026) says 'Squawks can be obtained from Island Expeditions in Crestfall or the Rotting Mire when pirates are present'. In players' reports the direct chance is not limited to those two islands, as pirates also come as invaders: comments have the mount from Normal Havenswood after a pirate landing (2021), from Whispering Reef (2018) and from Mythic Rotting Mire with pirates after some 350 expeditions (2022). Since patch 8.1 the creatures being on the island is enough, whatever is killed (a 2019 reply; the wiki, as read for the Twilight Avenger and the Island Thunderscale).

A third source, not the route described here: Wowhead's page lists four of the treasure-map follower missions of Battle for Azeroth (150 War Resources each) as able to pay out Squawks, and three commenters of 2019 and 2020 got it that way, from a Treasure Map that came with their expedition rewards. Where the maps come from today was not established.

The mount binds when picked up, asks for level 10 and flies (wiki). Wowhead's guide is listed on the item's own page; it was read (updated 2021) for the Twilight Avenger and the Island Thunderscale and not opened again for this mount.

Confidence in this entry: medium. Looked up in 2026.
