Tailoring leveling materials

For each expansion: the materials a good leveling guide uses, added up, and where a max-level character gets each one. The crafts themselves are in the guide, linked under each list.

Classic Tailoring 1–300 5 materials

Estimated materials

As the guide lists them. Expect to need a few more where a recipe turns yellow or green before the next one.

  • 115 × Linen Cloth
Farm Shadowfang Keep, Silverpine Forest The Wool Cloth dungeon: its mobs drop Linen along with the Wool, and a max-level character clears it in one sweep. Reset from your portrait and go again, up to ten instances an hour.
Farm Riverpaw gnolls near Sentinel Hill, Westfall The gnoll camps around Sentinel Hill are refilled almost as fast as you empty them. They are gone for anyone who has finished Westfall's closing storyline, Return to Sentinel Hill.
Farm Hillsbrad Worgens, Silverpine Forest The worgen stand close together, come back quickly and drop Linen and nothing better.
Almost every mob that drops Wool Cloth drops Linen as well, so a Wool farm fills both. Easy to buy, too.
  • 95 × Wool Cloth
Farm Shadowfang Keep, Silverpine Forest The dungeon in southern Silverpine is cleared in one sweep by a max-level character; reset it from your portrait and run it again, up to ten instances an hour.
Farm The road east of Greenwarden's Grove, Wetlands Dragonmaw Whelpstealers and Ebon Slavehunters fight a running battle here; both sides are hostile to you and drop Wool, with Linen alongside, so pull the whole fight at once. Replacements arrive very fast.
Farm Stormpike Engineers on Gavin's Naze, Hillsbrad Foothills The engineers come back almost the moment they die, so the camp never empties.
    Easy to buy, too.
  • 85 × Silk Cloth
Farm Uldaman and the cave leading to it, Badlands Dwarves and troggs fill the cave to the dungeon and the cliff to the right of its mouth, and all of them drop Silk. Sweep those up, then clear Uldaman itself and reset while the outside comes back.
Farm Westreach Summit, Thousand Needles Grimtotem Pillagers battle the Summit Defenders here; round up the fight and kill it all at once, and fresh ones arrive as soon as the numbers thin.
Farm Grimtotem camp near New Thalanar, Feralas Grimtotem Marauders stand closer together here than at Westreach Summit and drop plenty of Silk, but on retail they respawn much more slowly.
    Easy to buy, too.
  • Farm Zul'Farrak, Tanaris Before each run, fly over the instance portal to the outdoor Zul'Farrak, where about a hundred trolls crowd the stepped execution platform, and kill them all. Then clear the dungeon on your mount, opening the Shallow Graves by Witch Doctor Zum'rah for extra zombies, and reset; the outdoor trolls are back within three or four minutes.
Farm Stratholme, Eastern Plaguelands About as good as Zul'Farrak when someone else is on the outdoor trolls there. Go in at the Main Gate, clear it and reset, up to ten instances an hour.
Farm Dunemaul ogres, Tanaris An open-world spot: the ogres are spread out but come back quickly, and each drops one to three pieces.
Sandfury Shadowcasters in Zul'Farrak knock you off your mount, except the Chauffeured Chopper (the reward for 35 heirlooms), which counts you as a passenger. Easy to buy, too.
  • 50 × Runecloth
Farm Blackrock Depths, Blackrock Mountain The dwarves and other humanoids throughout the dungeon drop it. A full clear takes a max-level character six or seven minutes; reset the instance and go again, minding the limit of ten instances an hour.
Farm Twilight Base Camp and Twilight Post, Silithus Twilight cultists fill both camps: round up the Base Camp, kill it all, and move to Twilight Post while it refills. Speak to Zidormi in the north-east to see Silithus as it was before the Legion invasion, or the cultists are gone.
Farm Humanoid camps, Blasted Lands Drowned Gilnean Merchants and the other humanoids drop it. As in Silithus, Zidormi in the north has to show you the zone's old state first.

Farm Legion Hold, Shadowmoon Valley (Outland) Shadow Council Warlocks fill the camp, at least three of them up at any time, and fall in a hit or two.

Farm Pit of Saron, Icecrown No bosses in the way: round up every mob at the start of the dungeon on your mount, kill them in one go, run out and reset. It opens only once you have done the Forge of Souls quests, which start inside the Forge of Souls in the same tunnel.
Learn Cloth Scavenging first, from the quest of that name given by Northrend's tailoring trainers; without it Frostweave drops very rarely. Easy to buy, too.

Cataclysm Tailoring 1–75 1 material

Estimated materials

As the guide lists them. Expect to need a few more where a recipe turns yellow or green before the next one.

  • Farm The Bastion of Twilight, Twilight Highlands Fly to the raid's entrance on the floating island atop the tower near the south-west border (about 34, 78), round up all the trash before the first boss, kill it in one go, then run out and reset. Never kill that first boss, or the instance can no longer be reset. about 300 to 400 an hour, more for a tailor.
Farm Verlok Stand, Deepholm Verlok Grubthumpers and Shroomtenders crowd the stone pillar and the ground beneath it (around 73, 26) in large numbers and come back very quickly.
Farm The Restless Front, Tol Barad Peninsula Restless Soldiers and Infantry wear each other down to low health, so they fall almost at once, and they respawn often; daily questers can crowd the spot.
Tailors should learn Cloth Scavenging from Charles Worth's quest in Northrend Dalaran; it adds cloth from Cataclysm mobs too. A Potion of Treasure Finding adds chests that can hold Embersilk. Easy to buy, too.

Mists of Pandaria Tailoring 1–75 2 materials

Estimated materials

As the guide lists them. Expect to need a few more where a recipe turns yellow or green before the next one.

  • Farm Ik'thik mantid packs, Dread Wastes From about 58, 48 towards the Valley of the Four Winds stand five packs of eight Ik'thik Warriors, each with an Ik'thik Slayer: pull a whole pack at a time. They return three minutes after you kill them; meanwhile, tag the warriors that fly over the wall by Jonathan Jacobsen.
Farm Sra'vess, Townlong Steppes The mantid around Sra'vess are the next best thing to the Dread Wastes packs.
Farm Howlingwind Cavern, Kun-Lai Summit Mischievous Snow Sprites fill the cave, and the Suspicious Snow Piles open into more when you walk over them or hit them with area damage.
Cloth Scavenging works on Pandaria mobs as well; tailors learn it from Charles Worth's quest in Northrend Dalaran. Easy to buy, too.
  • Farm Heart of Fear (Raid Finder), Dread Wastes Queue through Lorewalker Han, up on the second level of the Seat of Knowledge above Mogu'shan Palace in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. Clear the trash of the first two rooms but leave the first boss, then leave the group, reset and go again; a clear takes about two minutes. 8 to 14 Motes of Harmony a run.
Craft From your bags, Pandaria Ten Motes of Harmony combine into one Spirit; no profession is needed. Every mob in Pandaria can drop Motes, dungeon mobs included. From 10 × Mote of Harmony (Combine (no profession)).

Warlords of Draenor Tailoring 1–100 1 material

Estimated materials

Added up from the guide's steps. Expect to need a few more where a recipe turns yellow or green before the next one.

  • 2,250 × Sumptuous Fur
Farm Tamed Clefthoof pack, Nagrand (Draenor) At about 78.7, 72.2 a pack of Tamed Clefthoof replaces itself as you kill it, one or two at a time, so you can stand still and keep killing; now and then kill the two by the Gorian Gladiators as well to force the respawn.
Farm Daggerjaw lake north of Vol'jin's Pride, Talador Circle the small lake killing Daggerjaws; most are back by the time you finish a lap.
Farm Echo Hunter camps, Spires of Arak Two small camps of beasts, close enough to shuttle between by flight master, and worth skinning too.
Draenor's tailoring material is fur, not cloth: furry beasts and furry humanoids drop it, so a skinner should farm beasts and skin them after looting. Easy to buy, too.

Legion Tailoring 1–100 6 materials

Estimated materials

Added up from the guide's steps. Expect to need a few more where a recipe turns yellow or green before the next one.

  • 1,062 × Shal'dorei Silk
Farm Snowblind Mesa, Highmountain Mightstone Flankers and Slingers battle friendly NPCs here and reappear almost the moment they die, so four to seven are usually up together. A last hit is enough to loot one.
Farm Murlocs on a lake shore, Azsuna A crowd of murlocs lines the shore of a lake, a spot made for area damage, though a world quest sometimes sends other players after them too.
Farm Runeaxe Training Grounds, Stormheim The camp always keeps a few Bonespeaker Runeaxes up: kill the last and two or three more appear, so you can stand in the middle and never stop.
Learn Tailoring before you farm: a tailor, even at skill 1, loots four to five times as much Shal'dorei Silk. Several players can tag the same Legion mob and all loot it. Easy to buy, too.
  • Buy Lalla Brightweave, Dalaran (Broken Isles) She sells it next to Tanithria, the Legion tailoring trainer, in Dalaran above the Broken Isles. Buy what the Silkweave Pantaloons need in one trip.
  • Buy Lalla Brightweave, Dalaran (Broken Isles) The same vendor as Runic Catgut, beside the Legion tailoring trainer Tanithria, but she only stocks it once you have finished A Needle Need and Meticulous Precision in the Legion tailoring quest chain.
The tailoring quest chain starts with Sew It Begins from Tanithria.
  • 18 × Arkhana
Disenchant Legion raids on Raid Finder, Broken Isles An enchanter can solo the Emerald Nightmare and the Nighthold, queued with Archmage Timear in Dalaran; legacy loot gives five items a boss, and they disenchant into Chaos Crystals. Chaos Shatter splits each crystal into two Leylight Shards and Ley Shatter each shard into three Arkhana.
Craft Ley Shatter, Dalaran (Broken Isles) Enchanters break one Leylight Shard into three Arkhana. Ildine Sorrowspear, beside the Legion enchanting trainer, sells the formula; Chaos Shatter, the step before, comes from Toraan the Revered once you are Friendly with the Argussian Reach. From 1 × Leylight Shard (Enchanting).
Disenchant Uncommon Legion gear, Broken Isles Green items from the Broken Isles disenchant straight into Arkhana, so keep the ones that drop while farming Legion cloth, ore or leather.
Disenchanting and shattering need Enchanting; anyone else should buy it, which is easy. That Legion greens give Arkhana is from game knowledge, not from the guides cited.
  • Gather Mining route, Val'sharah Mining. The guide's main Leystone route, with far less climbing up and down than Highmountain.
Gather Lagoon Basilisks, Azsuna Pull the basilisks together, kill them and mine Leystone from their corpses; they respawn fast enough to keep going without a pause, as long as you have the spot to yourself.
A miner at skill 1 gets as much ore per node as one at 100. Demonsteel Stirrups let you mine without leaving the saddle. Easy to buy, too.
  • Gather Herb, ore and skinning nodes, Broken Isles Herbalism, Mining and Skinning on the Broken Isles now and then yield a Blood of Sargeras on top of the usual haul, so it piles up while gathering Legion materials.
Binds when picked up: it cannot be bought or traded, though characters who played Legion often still have a stack. Where it comes from is from game knowledge; the guides cited only say it is bind-on-pickup.

Battle for Azeroth Tailoring 1–175 5 materials

Estimated materials

As the guide lists them. Expect to need a few more where a recipe turns yellow or green before the next one.

  • Farm Humanoids, Kul Tiras and Zandalar The basic Battle for Azeroth cloth: most humanoids in Kul Tiras and Zandalar drop it, so any dense camp of them will do.
No farming guide names a best spot for it. Tailors who reach 150 in Battle for Azeroth tailoring can do the quest chain for Synchronous Thread, which adds cloth from mobs and opens Time Rifts whose Chronal Caches hold cloth. Easy to buy, too.
  • Farm Humanoids, Kul Tiras and Zandalar The rarer Battle for Azeroth cloth, which turns up now and then among the Tidespray Linen from the expansion's humanoids.
No farming guide names a spot or a rate for it, and that it drops from the same humanoids as Tidespray Linen is game knowledge, not from the guide cited. Easy to buy, too.
  • 1,175 × Nylon Thread
Buy Daniel Brineweaver or the tailoring supply vendor beside him, Tradewinds Market, Boralus The Alliance's Kul Tiran Tailoring trainer sells it, as does the supply vendor next to him; buy the whole stack you need in one go.
Buy Pin'jin the Patient or the tailoring supply vendor beside him, Terrace of Crafters, Dazar'alor The Horde's Zandalari Tailoring trainer and the supply vendor near him both stock it.
  • Farm Shirakess Subjugators, Nazjatar Several Shirakess Subjugators are always standing in this part of Nazjatar, so there is never a gap between pulls; gather the lot and AoE them.
Farm Naga camp, Nazjatar The guide's second spot is a naga camp elsewhere in the zone; the naga there drop it too, so pull the camp together and clear it in one go.
Tailors loot far more of it than anyone else, even at Tailoring skill 1. The guide marks both spots on a map without naming the areas. Easy to buy, too.
  • 45 × Expulsom
Salvage Scrap-o-Matic 1000 (Tradewinds Market) or Shred-Master Mk1 (Terrace of Crafters), Boralus (Alliance) or Dazar'alor (Horde) Feed the scrapper any Battle for Azeroth gear, up to nine pieces at a time; quality makes no difference, so the cheapest route is crafting piles of Tidespray Linen Bracers (Tailoring) or Coarse Leather or Shimmerscale Armguards (Leatherworking) and scrapping them. BfA trinkets, other than crafted ones, always give one. about one for every six pieces scrapped.
Craft Transmute: Expulsom Alchemists with Kul Tiran or Zandalari Alchemy 110 can make five a day; the transmute has its own cooldown, apart from older ones. From 10 × Akunda's Bite, 10 × Winter's Kiss, 3 × Anchor Weed (Alchemy). 5 a day.
Get Profession world quests, Kul Tiras and Zandalar Some profession world quests reward it, and any world quest that rewards a trinket is worth doing, since the trinket scraps into one.
Binds when picked up: it cannot be mailed, so send the crafted gear to the character who needs the Expulsom and scrap it there.

Shadowlands Tailoring 1–100 3 materials

Estimated materials

As the guide lists them. Expect to need a few more where a recipe turns yellow or green before the next one.

  • Farm Archivam, Revendreth Beleaguered Excavators, Excavation Enforcers, Nefarious Thugs and Nefarious Collectors stand packed together here, so round up the whole dig and AoE it down. Only the Excavators, being neutral, stay put during a mounted round-up.
Farm Tirna Noch, Ardenweald Blighted Fadeblades and Masked Soulsplitters are close enough to drag eight or ten at a time on a mount and burn them down together.
Tailors loot far more of it than other characters, thanks to Shadowlands Cloth Scavenging, even at Shadowlands Tailoring skill 1. Easy to buy, too.
  • Farm Archivam, Revendreth Any mob that drops Shrouded Cloth can drop this rarer silk, so clear the same tightly packed dig of Excavators, Enforcers, Thugs and Collectors in big pulls and it collects alongside the Shrouded Cloth.
Farm Tirna Noch, Ardenweald The Blighted Fadeblades and Masked Soulsplitters here are the second spot; gather eight or ten at once on a mount.
It drops far less often than Shrouded Cloth, and mostly for Tailors, who get Shadowlands Cloth Scavenging. Easy to buy, too.
  • Buy Distributor Au'tem, Hall of Shapes, Oribos He stands right behind Stitcher Au'phes, the Shadowlands Tailoring trainer (around 45, 31); turn your back to the trainer and he is there.
Its tooltip says Tailoring vendors sell it, so Leatherworkers who need it go to the same spot in Oribos.

Dragonflight Tailoring 1–100 7 materials

Estimated materials

As the guide lists them. Expect to need a few more where a recipe turns yellow or green before the next one.

  • 390 × Wildercloth
Farm Brinetooth camp, The Azure Span Every mob that drops Tattered Wildercloth can drop Wildercloth too, only much less often, so work the same tight Brinetooth camp in pulls of seven or eight.
Farm Tower of Ishkdormi, The Azure Span The dragonkin around the tower, next door to the Brinetooth camp, are the second spot; round up five or six at a time.
It comes alongside Tattered Wildercloth at a much lower rate, so one long farm fills both. Easy to buy, too.
  • Farm Brinetooth camp, The Azure Span The Brinetooth mobs stand close together and come straight back, so you can sweep up seven or eight at a time and keep going without a break.
Farm Tower of Ishkdormi, The Azure Span Right beside the Brinetooth camp, the dragonkin around the tower respawn just as fast; they are more spread out, so expect groups of five or six.
Humanoids all over the Dragon Isles drop it. Tailors unravel it into Spool of Wilderthread. Easy to buy, too.
  • Craft Dragon Isles Unravelling Tailors learn this at Dragon Isles Tailoring 1: it destroys five pieces of Dragon Isles cloth and spins them into thread. Use Tattered Wildercloth; Wildercloth works too but is worth far more kept whole. From 5 × Tattered Wildercloth (Tailoring).
Unravelling also gives Dragon Isles Tailoring skill up to about 15, so farming Tattered Wildercloth covers both. Easy to buy, too.
  • Disenchant Dragonflight dungeons, Dragon Isles Rare (blue) Dragonflight gear disenchants into it. A max-level character clears the expansion's normal dungeons in a few minutes, and the bosses' blue drops are the steadiest supply.
Disenchanting needs Enchanting; anyone else should buy it, which is easy. That blue Dragonflight gear gives it, and that the dungeons are the place for that gear, is from game knowledge; the item's tooltip says only that it comes from disenchanting.
  • Salvage Dragon Isles Prospecting, Dragon Isles Jewelcrafters get it by prospecting Dragon Isles ore, five pieces a go; the Dragonflight Jewelcrafting guide uses Serevite Ore for it.
Needs Jewelcrafting; anyone else should buy it, which is easy.
  • Gather Herbalism loops, The Waking Shore, Ohn'ahran Plains or The Azure Span Herbalists find Dragon Isles herbs almost everywhere, so any loop through these zones fills bags fast; Lush nodes give extra herbs.
Needs Herbalism. That Hochenblume is the most common Dragon Isles herb, growing in every zone, is from game knowledge; the leveling guide gives routes for these three zones without ranking them. Easy to buy, too.
  • Disenchant Uncommon Dragonflight gear, Dragon Isles Green items from the Dragon Isles break down into it, so keep and disenchant the greens that drop while you farm Dragon Isles mobs, such as the Wildercloth camps in the Azure Span.
Disenchanting needs Enchanting; anyone else should buy it, which is easy. That green Dragonflight gear is what gives it is from game knowledge; the item's tooltip says only that it comes from disenchanting.

The War Within Tailoring 1–100 5 materials

Estimated materials

As the guide lists them. Expect to need a few more where a recipe turns yellow or green before the next one.

  • 200 × Weavercloth
Farm Nerubians by the Opalcreg mine, Isle of Dorn Just south of Dornogal, the nerubians around the mine were Method's recommended Weavercloth farm at the expansion's launch; round up as many as you can and AoE them down.
Humanoids throughout Khaz Algar drop it, but Tailors get far more, and more again with the Textile Treasures specialization, which now and then drops Weavercloth Bolts too. The same farm gives green gear for Storm Dust. Tailors unravel it into Spool of Weaverthread for Weavercloth Bolts. Easy to buy, too.
  • 10 × Storm Dust
Disenchant Uncommon War Within gear, Khaz Algar Green Khaz Algar items disenchant into it. Farming humanoids, such as the nerubians by the Opalcreg mine on the Isle of Dorn, throws off plenty of greens to break down.
Disenchanting needs Enchanting; anyone else should buy it, which is easy. The Designated Disenchanter specialization, with its Uncommon Utilitarian branch, raises the quality of the dust you get.
  • Gather Altered herbs, Khaz Algar Altered is one of the empowered herb types that pop up at random in place of ordinary Khaz Algar herbs, so follow any herb loop and pick every one you see. Overloading an Altered herb summons a mob that drops more samples.
Gather Weeping ore, Khaz Algar Miners get it from Weeping deposits, the matching empowered ore; overloading one also calls a mob carrying extra samples.
Needs Herbalism or Mining. A Phial of Truesight shows the camouflaged nodes as well, about a fifth more to pick. Easy to buy, too.
  • Gather Irradiated herbs, Khaz Algar Irradiated is one of the empowered herb types that replace ordinary Khaz Algar herbs at random, so there is no set route: loop any of the four zones and pick every Irradiated herb you pass.
Needs Herbalism. A Phial of Truesight shows the camouflaged nodes as well, about a fifth more to pick. Easy to buy, too.
  • 324 × Mosswool Thread not in the guide's list
Buy Tailoring supplies vendor, by the trainer, Dornogal (Isle of Dorn) The supplies vendor standing near the Tailoring trainer in Dornogal sells it, so buy all of it in one go before you start; it stacks to 1000.
The Tailoring guide wants 324: 300 for the 51 Weavercloth Bolts at 10 to 25, and the rest for Exquisite Weavercloth Bolts and the Pioneer's Perfected pieces. The item says it is sold by Tailoring vendors; the guide names no vendor.

Midnight Tailoring 1–100 2 materials

Estimated materials

As the guide lists them. Expect to need a few more where a recipe turns yellow or green before the next one.

  • Farm Shadowguard Point (delve), Voidstorm An open delve full of humanoids, at about 37.4, 47.7. On tier 1, mount up, run to the boss platform pulling everything on the way, bunch the casters round a corner and AoE them; then loot, leave and reset. about 30 per clear.
Farm Broken Throne, Zul'Aman In the south-west of Zul'Aman, Twilight Blade Cultists crowd the area; loop round killing them. This is where group cloth farms gather. 200 to 300 per half hour in a group.
Farm The Grudge Pit (delve), Harandar A tiny delve at about 70.3, 67.1 whose arena is packed with humanoids: kill them all in one pull, leave through your portrait menu and go back in. 10 to 15 per clear.
Tailors are the ones who get it, from humanoids across the Midnight zones. The Fabric Specialist specialization raises the drop chance, and Nimble Needlework adds Sunfire Silk and Arcanoweave drops. Delve loot does not seem to change with the tier. Easy to buy, too.
  • Disenchant Uncommon Midnight gear, Eversong Woods, Zul'Aman, Harandar, Voidstorm Green items from the Midnight zones break down into it; disenchant the greens from questing, world quests and any mob farming in the new zones.
Craft Radiant Shatter Enchanters learn it from the trainer at Midnight Enchanting 50; it breaks one Radiant Shard into three Eversinging Dust. From 1 × Radiant Shard (Enchanting).
Disenchanting needs Enchanting; anyone else should buy it, which is easy. That green Midnight gear is what gives it is from game knowledge; the item's tooltip says only that it comes from disenchanting.
